3rd Trimester

water broke in L&D

Started this morning as a small trickle but has been slowly coming out ever since.  I'm 1 cm so we are hoping they will admit me and tryto hwold off delivery   as long as possible.  The doc that just came in was trying to get me on Pitocin but I said no.  Baby is doing well and I don't have an infection.

  • Good luck! I hope they are able to keep her in there awhile longer.
  • Thanks! I was just telling DH last night that I was freaking out about only having maybe two more weeks (due to my weird uterus).  He really didn't believe she would come early.  We are so not ready!

Good for you! Everyday that baby stays in is a blessing. 34w isn't a time to rush labor. I hope you get good news from the MFM.

The reason the would encourage pitocin is because of the following: When you water breaks preterm and before your labor starts (preterm premature rupture of membranes or pprom) it is statistically most likely from an infection/bacteria in your vagina that has eaten through the amniotic sac.  So, he is encouraging getting the baby out before that bacterium starts to fester or festers more in your amniotic fluid.  Again, he is going with the research and statistics that this is most likely the beginning of chorio even if you don't have any signs or symptoms at this time.  Actually, your pprom would be the first sign of chorio.  If you are choosing not to have pit, then I hope they have you on a multiple IV antibiotics (ampicillin and gentamycin) for at least 5+ days until they switch you to oral antibiotics (that is if you are still pregnant then).

  • Good luck to you. I hope you are able to get the steroid shots, those really help the lungs. I had my first baby at 34 weeks and he is a healthy little guy today. He only had to be in NICU for 1 night and then was in level 2 for 2 weeks but was always stable, just learning how to eat. It is amazing how strong those little 34 weekers can be. Hang in there!

  • ok they just came in and explained everything. It was confusing because the first nurse that came in said they would admit me if they could and try to wait. 5hen the doc came in and said he was starting pitocin, without any explanation of why.  Then MFM came in and said we could go either way, there are benefits and risks to both.  Then nicu came in and they were the most helpful. They explained that it is not so bad @ 34 weeks and the baby may not have to stay very long.  No one is telling us that we have to go one way or the other.

Sorry you have to make these tough decisions! Great news that they think your LO will be strong enough not to need NICU very long! I hope things go well and you end up with a perfectly health little baby :)

  • Thanks for the well wishes!  We are just going to do the pitocin after the nicu explained what happens if there is an infection.  It's not ideal but what can I do. I thought since I don't have signs of infection we were good. but there could be one brewing and I just don't have a fever yet.

  • Good luck mama. On my birth month board we have had a couple of early deliveries....one at 30 weeks where the little guy is not even on oxygen, he is doing great and just learning how to eat, etc. Those extra 4 wks you have held her in there are of great benefit. It sounds like she will do better outside then inside!

  • Good luck! I always try to trust that my doctors know what is best for me and LO, it sounds like you are in good hands and they are doing the right thing. I would be more worried about keeping LO in than out if infection were setting in. Keep us posted!

  • I'm assumming that you are off having a baby right now, but GL. I had my DD at 35 weeks due to pprom. We were extremely fortunate to need no NICU time at all. Hopefully you will only need a few days in the NICU.

If you plan on BFing, please make sure that you work with a LC. BFing a preemie is tough and it took a lot of work to make it happen.

  • Sorry you had to make such tough decisions.. Make sure that they keep you informed!  Demand answers and explanations, especially if you feel uncomfortable.  This is your birth process, not theirs!!  Good luck for a happy and healthy baby soon!!!!

Hope everything worked out for you and LO.  Girls tend to do better when they are born premature.  I am sure that she is going to be just fine.
