Baby Names

Gemma?

Do you like this name?

Do you think it's "known" enough that most people would spell and pronounce it correctly?

Does it go with big brothers Declan and Asher?

Any interesting MN ideas?

Re: Gemma?

  • I love it, and think it's common enough (though probably more in the UK than NA). I think it fits great with your other children's names.

Not that you need it, but you get my big stamp of approval :)

  • I like the name Gemma in theory, but always want to pronounce it with a "g" sound rather than a "j".

  • I'm honestly not a fan. The first several times I saw this name I really wasn't sure how to pronounce it, and even now when I see it, I want to say it with a hard G even though I know that's not right. I think you (and later, your child) will do A LOT of correcting in her lifetime.

    Yes, this!

  • I love this name! I think it's so cute! I don't think you will get too many mispronunciations, but you could also spell it w/ a J if you're worried about that-I've seen both spellings. And I think it goes great w/ your boys' names!

OMG, please don't spell it with a J!!!

My name is Gianna and when I was little it was extremely uncommon and it got butchered, but people caught on.  Gemma is becoming more popular now and while it will still probably be mispronounced from time to time, I think it's beautiful and more people than not will know how to pronounce it.

  • My cousin (who's now 16) is Gemma and when she was born, the rest of the family was like "What the heck kind of name is that?"  It seems to be more familiar now.  It's different and, I don't think, hard to pronounce.

My cousin is Gemma WandaMarie (yes, quite the mouthful).  I think it goes with your sons' names!

  • I've known one Gemma and never questioned how it was pronounced, but I'm honestly not a fan of the name. At all. It just doesnt sound nice or pretty to me.

That said, who cares what I think?! And I think it sounds nice with your sons names :)

  • I like this name.  A good friend of mine's daughter is Gemma.  The name fits her really well.  I think most people will pronounce it correctly, but I will tell you that my friend and her husband disagreed about the pronunciation of their daughter's name until she was 7 months old.  My friend pronounced it Gem-ma and her husband pronounced it with a hard G like in give.  They let the Super Bowl decide how it would be pronounced (he's from Pittsburgh, she from Wisconsin (this was 1 year ago)) and she won.

I think it goes well with Declan and Asher.

My friend's daughter's middle name is Michelle which I think works well.

  • I love love love Gemma, and I like it with Declan and Asher as well :)
  • I love it!

I could see it being spelled with a J by people who aren't familiar with it, though. Just because of names like Jessica, Jennifer, etc. that have the same beginning sound.

  • This name gets asked about fairly frequently around here. I think it's a nice enough name, and I think it's becoming more and more "normal." I also like it with your other children's names.

  • It's my name, though I spell it with a 'J', so thumbs up here! Even with a 'J' I've had to correct people because it's not that common, but I've always liked it so it wasn't a big deal.
