When did your DC first see their kindergarten room?

Is it normal for their to be an open house so the kids can see their classroom before the pressure of the first day?

Or did they get to see it at registration?

Or just on the first day of school?

I ask because our DCP is in one district and I live in another. In the district we don't live in, they have a big open house for all incoming 5yos and the kids get to look around. They have it in April.

My district has nothing. They said "oh, I guess you could bring your child to registration and have a look", like I was asking the weirdest question in the world. DD is already nervous about kindie and I'd really like her to see it beforehand.

So am I weird? Or is my school district lame?

At my dd's school they didn't see their room until the first day, although there was a big picnic in the school yard before school started.  In another school in our district they do visit the classroom itself.

We take DS in to meet the guidance counselor and school nurse in May, tour the school, etc. We find out who his teacher is in July, and then they do a staggered start schedule in September (so one half of the class attends one day, the other half the next day, then full class on the third day).

DS got to see the 3 different kindergarten classrooms at an orientation just for the kids in May, prior to school starting in September. They didn't know which classroom would be theirs yet, but at least they got the idea of what the classrooms looked like. They also got to take a bus ride. This was a separate orientation, apart from registration/info night that the parents attended in March.

They have an orientation in April where they incoming K students ride the bus with their parents and spend an hour or so with the current K students (so it might not be their classroom) while parents are at their own orientation in the auditorium.  Then in June they have the evaluation.

In our district, the kids were allowed to see the kindie rooms at Registration Night (not that we knew which teacher he would have), and then again at Open House the week before school started.

He saw it on his first day. They had an informal meet the teacher a few days before school started, but we were away. We did drive by his school several times and talked about him going, etc. My son tends to get anxiety, so we talked about it a lot. He was totally fine the first day. He took the bus and we we met him at school and walked him in, and met the teacher. I dont even think he said 'bye' to us. LOL!

While the parents were in the MPR listening to speeches at orientation the May prior to school starting, the kindergarten teachers took the kids to the classrooms for cookies, juice and an art project. We didn't know his teacher yet, but he got to see the room and meet a few kids.

They had a 30-minute "orientation" about a week before. DS checked out the room, met his teacher, listened to a story, colored a picture.

i wouldn't go much earlier than that.

We go to registration in May where he will see the rooms, get on the school bus, meet staff, ect.  Then the week before school starts there will be an open house where he will go to his room, meet his teacher and drop off his supplies.

They brought in the kids individually to do skills assessments before the school year started and they got to see the rooms then.  Although it might not have been their exact room depending on which Kinder teacher did the assessment and which room they were placed in.

They do a KG roundup in May where the kids come in and see the rooms, school and take a bus ride.  For DS, they had him come in the week before class to do an assessment with his teacher too.  No idea if they'll do it this year again too.

She saw it on the first day of school. There is no orientation, etc, in this district. It's very, very large so that's all i can think of is that it would be a monumental task to get thousands of Kinder's to orientation. And parent involvement is very low at her school, so they might think parents won't attend anyway.

I was bummed, but DD did just fine. I was way more nervous about it than DD.

Our elementary school has 4 sessions in May that the incoming kindergarteners are invited to attend - they visit the classroom for one, ride the school bus for another, have a school tour for another, and play on the playground for the last one.  Then a couple of weeks before school starts there's a sort of meet the teacher appointment that is part evaluation and part tour the classroom.

We have an open house day in August where they go meet their teacher, see their room and if they are car riders we can pick up their car riders number.  So yes, they see their teacher before the first day of school.

All of our schools have an open house about a week before the start of the new school year.

There's registration in March or April, but that was only in the gym - just to bring the paperwork and make sure you weren't missing anything.

The whole school has a "Peek at Your Seat" about a week before school starts in August.  It's kind of crazy, but that's the first time they see the classroom.

He saw the school the spring before K started, his Pre-K did a tour, but he didn't get to see his actual classroom until a week before classes started at the open house.

The night before school. It was weird, though, because we had just found out the same day that we would be starting there. He was registered for another school and was set to start the following week. We got the call, accepted our spot, went to orientation, and started his first day all within 18 hours. Oh, and we were living out of town (temporarily) at the time, and were supposed to only be in town for a visit. Let's just say we all had a shell-shocked look on the first day of school.

My DD is going into kindergarten, we have to register her March 1st. I was looking at the school district calendar for next year and they have a kindy oreintation about 10 days before school. I think it is a wonderful idea.

They see it at the Kindergarten orientation in May but we will be away for it which I am sooooo upset about.  I am going to bring him to new student orientation in August but he will not see the class, ride the bus and will likely not meet the teacher.  I think I am going to call the school and ask for to do a walk-through, I will likely tell them I am not sure if we will be doing public or private and want to see the school which is a lie but the truth is that if money was no issue I really want to do private so it feels like less of a lie;)

My DD goes to PreK in the same school and they do a lot to make sure the kids know their way around the school although not sure they go into the kindergarten classroom during school.  The official events for the kids to see the classroom and meet the teachers and other kids are at Kindergarten Round-Up in mid March - the kids see the classroom, meet the teachers and get to go on a bus ride.  In May, they have an evening event called "Kindergarten Bridge" which again takes place at school, with the teachers and other students.  They have a formal Kindergarten playground night the week before school starts and that week is also the all elementary school open house where the kids bring in their school supplies, again meet the teachers and the other kids in class and they have a pizza dinner.  On the day before kindergarten starts (1-12 starts on Tuesday after Labor Day and PreK and Kindergarten start on Wednesday) they have open class time and all kids are encouraged to come and hang out in class for as long as they want.  I have been told that all of this really helps the kids feel comfortable on that 1st day of school.

Our district had an open house after the kids had been assigned classrooms. There are 4 kindergarten classes in our elementary school. I think our open house was a couple weeks before school started.
