Disappointing 40 week appt

I went to my 40 week appointment today and am kind of concerned with the results.  I have been measuring about 2 weeks ahead for the majority of the 3rd trimester and have been worried about having a really big baby (I'm pretty small framed).  The doctors all told me there is nothing to worry about and that they don't see red flags until you measure 3 weeks ahead.  Well today when I was talking to the doctor, she told me that it appears that my baby's shoulders are extremely large and could possibly prevent the baby from being able to successfully navigate through the birth canal.  She scheduled me for a growth scan this afternoon.  She said that she is thinking c-section because the baby just seems way to big for my body.

I know that growth scans are not always accurate, but I am still totally freaked out.  I have been planning for a natural birth and am really hoping I do not have to get a c-section. And on a side note, I have been asking the doctors to do a growth scan for about 6 weeks.  If it is determined that I need a c-section, I will be a bit upset because this could have possibly been avoided with an induction at 37 or 38 weeks (I know not natural, but at least it would still be a vaginal birth).  Ugh, sorry just ranting.  Hoping for positive thoughts!!

  • I felt the same way about having a natural birth.  I was in labor for 6.5 hours and then ended up having to have a C-Section due to the baby being breech.  Things happen.  It's best to try and come to terms with them.  The C-Section wasn't all bad.

  • I hope that you you get a good scan so you can have the labor you want. Best of luck!

  • Even if the growth scan shows that the baby is large that doesn't mean it won't be possible for you to birth the baby vaginally. I think doctors now are more quick to jump to do c/s because it is something they can control and predict.  They have no gaurantee that you will be able to birth the baby vaginally but know they can schedule and get the baby out via c/s.  It is ultimately your decision what you want to do and if you want to wait to have the baby naturally then you have the right to try that.  As long as both you and baby are healthy there is no danger in waiting.  If you can't birth the baby either because the baby doesn't descend enough (this happened with me with DS1) or you try pushing and LO doesn't come out then they will do a c/s anyway.

With DS1 I didn't want a c/s either.  I tried my best to have him vaginally but he didn't descend, i stalled at 7cm, and his heart rate was being effected.  This ended in me having a c/s with him.

I agree with this post. It's completely up to you. My midwife with our first daughter told me pretty much the same thing - that I wouldn't be able to birth a large baby naturally. The growth scan put her at about 8 and a half pounds. Thankfully, I had a perfectly natural and vaginal birth. DD#1 was only 7 pounds 12 ounces. I had absolutely no problems during delivery.

I hope you get the labor and delivery you are hoping for! Just remember, that it is up to you as long as the baby (and yourself) are not being affected in a negative way. Best of luck to you!
