Stupid question of the day

SOOOOO....I'm probably revealing my first time mom-edness way too much here but I need some silly advice. The Gaithersburg Totswap is coming up and I'm planning to get a bunch of clothes for DD. Until now, she's been living in various versions of footed one-piece clothes - cute ones, more formal ones, etc... I do realize, however, that a 6 month old baby should really start to wear 'real' clothes. My hesitation has always been that

a. DD has a ginormous head, which really makes buying tops for her fun - no cute turtlenecks, no cute collars because a lot of them get stuck on her head and then she starts wailing

b. I don't want her to get cold by wearing 2 pieces (pants and a separate top) and have her belly exposed as she rolls all over and the top scrunches up.

Believe me, I realize how ridiculous these concerns are but I've been angsting over what clothes to get her. If you dress babies in two pieces, do you always put a onesie underneath to prevent them from getting cold/exposing delicate skin? How do you get socks to stay on? (i put socks underneath the footed clothes and she can't get to them - otherwise, socks are off in a heartbeat). When should i get her exposed to wearing shoes? Only when she starts walking?

I don't want her to be THAT kid in the daycare who's mom still dresses her in footed one pieces - help a befuddled mother, please, otherwise my child may go to high school in footed sleepers.

Re: Stupid question of the day

  • Not a stupid question at all! Baby clothes are tricky.

My kid wears a onesie every single day. And because he's skinny but long, he wears babylegs under most of his pants. He also has a big head, and we actually had to size up on his onesies so I could get them over his enormous head.

ETA: His outfits are almost all Carters onesies, pants and jackets/fleeces/sweaters. They are durable, cheap, cute and fit him pretty well. In the summer, we'll probably have him in short sleeve onesies and shorts.

He is 13 months and not yet walking, and he has yet to wear shoes for longer than 10 minutes. We will eventually get him sized and try to get him used to wearing them more once he's walking and we're spending more time outside. So probably in the next few months.

  • Most days, because I leave for work so early, he stays in footed pj's all day.  Comes home, gets a bath and new pj's for the next day.  Ha ha, I'm totally that mom and completely okay with it.  In the summer/early fall, I would just put him in a onesie because he was still an infant.  When it gets warm I'll keep him in onesies and maybe just add shorts.  Somedays, when I dont have to be out of the house by 5 am (this is only like once a week), he will go in a onesie and a pair of sweatpants and socks.  Once he starts walking I'll worry about shoes.  I do have friends that would always put a onesie under an outfit just to keep them warmer.  To each their own.  Personally I don't think it's necessary as they tend to just go house, car, house/daycare center, car, home.  But yes, it is an option.

  • When DS fit in them, he always wore white onsies under his "real clothes".  Now he's in Hanes undershirts and I always tuck them into his pants really well.

I always found that w/ socks, if they were too small they fell off.  Obviously if they're too big they'll come off just as easily.  Early on, I had success with Robeez socks.  I've also heard good things about socks from Old Navy.  As far as shoes... I had him in shoes at 6 months because it was chilly outside.  He just wore them when we were out in public because by that point he was sitting up on his own, in a highchair.  As soon as we got home, they came off, but more than likely he took them off in the car.  He's great at this even to this day.

  • totally agree - baby clothes are tricky!  and, our preferences have really changed as DS got bigger.

We loved the one-piece button up with footies for a long time for the same reasons, but they started to not fit as well so pants and tops actually worked better for us.  I also found that Carters and Old Navy tops had pretty flexible/wide necklines, and I think Kohls Jumping Beans brand make onesie's that have side snaps on the collar (but they always seemed to get to be too small the fastest - DS is chubby though).

We always do a onesie under clothes if the belly would be exposed, but we buy ones that are sleeveless (think muscle T).  I found them at Carters and LOVE them because they are so easy to get on and off, and DS's chubby arms look cute in them :) You could also buy printed onesies instead of shirts, and just wear them with pants so you don't have two layers up top.  For the summer, we loved the one-piece short things that had buttons between the legs for easy diaper changes - I think they were called rompers? We didn't put a onesie under those.

I like Old Navy's triple roll socks because they stay on, even when DS tries to pull them off.  Getting all the same type/color socks makes laundry faster too, and if one or two get lost, no mis-matched pairs!

    GL!

  • Our babies were 6 months in February of last year, just like your DD. We did one piece suits most days for daycare and then pants and shirts on the weekend.

Starting around 7 months or so, we went to all regular clothes. We never did onesies underneath and never had a problem with their tummies getting cold (actually, the thought never crossed my mind until reading this post). We stopped doing any type of onesies around 8 months b/c I found them to be a PITA and b/c by that point, DS was in 12-18 months clothes at least and they don't make many in that size.

For socks, for the first 8-9 months we used Trumpettes, which stayed on really well and look like little shoes. After that, it was summer, so we never had socks or shoes on the babies. We didn't start socks regularly again until it got chillier out so around 13 months (last September), and then we started Robeez for shoes. It's best for baby to go barefoot as much as possible, so I didn't see the need to spend money on any shoes before that.

As for her head size, we also have that problem, but I just try to find clothes with large/stretch neck holes. They seemed to mind less as they got older.

this is so true - it seems counter-intuitive, but as soon as a sock comes off too easily it is time for the next size!

FWIW I also found that DS didn't outgrow separate T's and pants as fast as one-peices so they tended to last longer.

  • Some of this will depend on your kid.  I never had T wear onesies under her outfits because she runs warm and would have been sweaty from it.  So she was always that kid with her belly (or diapers) peeking out.  I don't remember her shirts scrunching up badly from rolling around or crawling, though.  We also had several rompers for the summer at that age - they were really convenient.  I think some socks are better than others for staying on - we had good luck with the Old Navy roll-top ones.  There's nothing wrong with throwing on some soft-soled shoes like Robeez if you think that will hold the socks on.  We didn't get shoes for T until she was about 10 months, but then we also didn't bother with socks for the summer when she was 7-9 months old either.

Some of the nicer clothes lines (Janie & Jack and Gymboree for example) have snaps or buttons on the back of the shirts with cute collars to make them easier to slip over heads.  That might be one option when you want to look for girlier outfits.

  • Babylegs socks stay on and have the gripper soles. Now that LO is cruising and pushing his toys everywhere, we can't have him in slidy socks because he slips and falls.

  • I have to agree with PPs, the Old Navy socks are the best. That's all my kids wear. They're grippy, stay on, and come out decent from the wash.
  • Ditto pp--put a onesie on her underneath whatever she's wearing. I liked that because it kept J warm, as you said, and often if he spilled something on his outfit we could peel it off and he'd still have a clean shirt underneath.

J was in those one piece deals until he started crawling, when he needed to be able to use his feet for traction.

Definitely don't use shoes until she starts walking. Until then, just socks are OK (and I used to send J to daycare without them sometimes in the summer).

P.S. You put socks on *underneath* the footed things? I . . . did not do that.

  • Most of the outfits they had at that age were onesies and then pants, so no issue of exposed bellies!
  • DS is 19 months and he still wears a white onesie 99% of the time under all his clothesEmbarrassed. In the summer I put him in the sleeveless ones and in the winter the long sleeved ones. I love the 4-packs from Carter's, they have lasted so long. I hate having his tummy exposed and diaper sticking out, even in the summer. In the summer I think it helps absorb sweat and in the winter it's a great extra layer.

Tomandcourt, the girl runs cold all the time - someone suggested putting her in a onesie and socks underneath the footed things (the footed one pieces are not fleece, they're cotton - i'm not a huge fan of the fleece ones because she got all sweaty and clammy in them). It's worked great for her!

You ladies are AWESOME!!!! Great, great suggestions across all fronts - i'm taking notes. Actually really excited to get the girl some new clothes as she is fast outgrowing her current clothes. Like mssaint's LO, DD is long and skinny so we've already got in her 9 months clothes but they're SO baggy on her. It somewhat looks ridiculous, sometimes. I am, as they say, a woman on a mission ;-)

  • Babylegs are awesome for long, skinny kids. They keep their little legs warm even when their pants are really short :-) And they're precious. And on sale right now!
