LO weight loss - talk to me

Every now and then I weigh LO to make sure he's still doing all right. Late January at his 15th month he was 23 lbs 10 oz. Now, a month later he's a pound less. This is the first time we've gone backwards.

He doesn't have a fever. Temperment's been fine. He's had a light, dry, occasional (maybe 2 or 3 times per day) cough the past couple of days. I've had a sore throat the past couple of days, but if LO's throat is sore, he isn't letting on by being fussing.

This cough is the first symptom he's had since a year ago when he had croup, so I haven't had much experience with illnesses with him.

His canine teeth did just poke through and the other one is so close to breaking the gum. But, he's never slowed down the eating this much with other teething.

Edited to add: Also, he is now walking full time. Would he really be burning that more calories than crawling?

Is it possible to lose this much weight from teething and/or a sore throat? Anyone, anyone?

And, yes I will check with pedi in the a.m., but I'd like some reassurance, too.

One more edit :-) : If your child has lost weight due to illness or teething (hope that's it!), how quickly did they put the weight back on?

Re: LO weight loss - talk to me

  • Eli lost about a pound when he started really walking--he put it back on over a couple months. Now his weight fluctuates half a pound one way or another when he gets a tooth or is sick--it doesn't last.  Our pedi said it is completely normal.

  • They tend to lose some weight when they start walking but I wouldn't bee too concerned and I would stop weighing him and freaking yourself out.  He will be weighed at all check ups and if the dr. is concerned, they will tell you.

  • Sounds like the typical weight loss that will happen when a baby is on the move more. DS dropped from the 50th percentile to the 25th percentile from his 12 to 15 month appt. Basically he didn't gain any weight. Totally within the huge range of normal for this stage.

  • DS lost weight when he began walking. We are trying to put it back on with a high calorie diet per Pediatricians recommendation. She isn't concerned with it though.
  •  Glad to hear it wasn't just my LO.

We had a time of slow growth between the 2nd and 4th month visit (due to stress at home while BFing), so with each doctor visit it sometimes feels like a wrestler doing a weigh-in. He's been fine otherwise, but I just had to do a double-take when I looked at the scale.

I don't weigh him all the time, it was more just an after-thought- maybe once a month now. I do it to see if he's staying on the same curve to plan where we might be clothes-wise, if anything, in case I see sales for larger size clothes.

     Thanks for feedback!
