Question about HepB vaccine

I started reading my Vaccine Book last night. His alternate schedule says to wait until 3 years to give the HepB. The Pediatric guideline has that as the very first shot at birth.

According to ImmunizeNC.com, the requirements for NC School Entry:

Hepatitis B

Three doses. One dose by age three months, second dose by age five months and a third dose by age 19 months. Persons born on or after July 1, 1994 are required to receive the hepatitis B vaccine. The last dose of hepatitis B vaccine series shall not be administered prior to 24 weeks of age.

When are y'all getting that shot done?

Re: Question about HepB vaccine

  • Nate didn't get it at birth, but he did get the first dose at some point (maybe with his 2 month shots?).  We pretty much have to stick with immunization guidelines for our daycare (and since Nate is SO big, I don't worry too much about it).

  • We declined it at birth, and he got the first dose instead at 2 weeks.  If I had read the Vaccine Book then, I might have waited longer.  If I were you, I would at least decline it at the hospital because it's very easy to make it up later at all their early visits.  I can't believe the one they choose to give them at birth is for a sexually transmitted disease of all things LOL!

  • we declined at the hospital too--I wanted to wait until at least a month since he was a preemie.  I asked the neonatalogist and he said as long as DH and I didn't have it and were vaccinated and we weren't planning on having DS shoot up or something, it would be fine to wait.  :)  He's on track now but I just wanted him to be a bit bigger so we waited a month.

  • We declined it at birth and she still has not had it. Our pedi said the main concern for HepB at her age is if she is in an accident and needs a blood transfusion (b/c obviously she does not do drugs or is having sex). I am not sure when we will have it, probably closer to when she starts school, if at all.
  • We're skipping this one completely.  If she later needs it for travel or for a job or something, she can get it then.  I just don't think everyone needs it, esp. newborns with no exposure.  I got teh vax in 1997 when I first started teaching and was dealing with bodily fluids on a daily basis, but it lasts just 10 years and I don't plan to get it again myself unless I become at risk again. :)
