Parenting after a Loss

pooping & spit-up question...

Ok... B is 2 1/2 months old.  Ever since she was about 1 month old she has really started straining to poop but is not constipated.  Obviously she's learning to use muscles that she didn't have to use before and our pediatrician said it was perfectly normal as long as it wasn't hard when she did finally poop.  On several occasions she has decided that it's a perfectly good time to poop while she's being fed her bottle, which has resulted in her spitting up so forcefully that it comes out of her nose and she spits up just about everything she'd taken.  DH thinks it's normal and she's still just learning to use the different muscles.  It freaks me out when she does it and I about panic because she panics.  She's only done it maybe 3-4 times since she was a month old.  Am I worrying over nothing and she will just outgrow this once her muscles mature?  Or have any of you experienced this with your LOs and it been signs of something else wrong?  He doesn't think I need to call the pedi but I think I might just to ease my mind.  We've already dealt with reflux and tummy problems.  I'm hoping this is just a phase she'll outgrow?

TIA for your help and input.

Re: pooping & spit-up question...

  • A went through months of spitting up so much that it came out of his nose and mouth. It concerned me because R never did that and it's scary! Our pedi said that it was okay. His spitting up was never related to pooping though.

ETA: The pedi also told us that he would outgrow it and he has. He still spits uo forcefully but it rarely ever comes out of his nose anymore.

  • C has some GI intolerances and would often strain pretty hard to poop. He would frequently strain so hard he would spit up. He has outgrown this since passing a BM has become easier for him!

  • G does this from time to time when nursing. If I don't look for the warning signs I end up with a puddle in my lap. :(

  • Oh my gosh - Pip does almost the same thing.  Except I change her diaper when I switch breasts and invariably she's always grunting away when I'm trying to change her - and while she straining she usually spits up big-time and starts choking (because she's laying down) - and of course she's pooping, so I'm panicking trying to keep her from pooping all over the place, trying to prop her up and pat her back all at the same time.  Good times!  I think she just needs to grow out of it.  I've tried explaining why this is happening, but she refuses to listen - stubborn girl.  Big Smile  (BTW - Pip also has reflux, so I think it's just a matter of needing more mature tummy muscles.)

That totally sounds JUST like our episodes.  B almost always does it in the late afternoon/night when she hasn't pooped in a day or so.  I have those talks with her too!  I don't know why I think she'll understand me and not do it again, LOL!  B also has mild reflux.  It's something that has gotten tremendously better both as she's getting older and since we started putting some cereal in her bottle.  I can't wait for this phase to be over with.  It doesn't happen often but when it does it really freaks me out because she gets this panicked look on her face like "mom I'm dying!  help!"  One day we'll look back at all this and just laugh, and probably use it as black mail for when she gets older.... hmm, maybe I should get a picture of it, LOL!
