Trouble TTC

IUI timing: 40 hours after trigger?

I'm working with a new RE this cycle, one who does things a bit unconventionally.  He has me triggering at 6pm tomorrow for an IUI 40 hours later.  He had some reasoning about 40 hours, even when I voiced my concern that I would ovulate sooner than 40 hours.  He claims the egg itself can live for up to 40 hours.??? I've never heard that before.

DH and I are really iffy with this RE and not sure if we'll do more cycles with him.  In the meantime, I'm really thinking about tinkering with my trigger time to make it closer to 36 hours (which is what my old RE did).  At the same time I feel guilty for wanting to tinker. WW3Tdo?

I had a really good monitoring appointment today.  My lining was at a 7 (not ideal, but up from 5 on Saturday), and we hope it's at 8 or 9 by Thursday's IUI.  I have 4 follies in the 14-15 range that we think will be perfect on Thursday.  I'm stimming tonight and triggering tomorrow night.

Re: IUI timing: 40 hours after trigger?

  • My RE office does the IUI between 36-40 hours after trigger.  I triggered at 36 and at 40 and got pg both times.

I would follow my RE's directions.

I do feel better hearing that you've done the 40 hour timing also.  Thanks for chiming in!

  • my RE does it as close or just before 36 hours only.

  • My thinking is that he wanted to try both ends of the window.  Some like to have the sperm waiting there when the egg gets there, and some like to have them get there at (roughly) the same time.  The timing is pretty much guess work, which is why there is the window.

best of luck to you :)

  • My RE pretty much admits that it is guess work. She told us it's important to BD the night of the trigger and the night of the IUI, so that if the IUI timing isn't right, there's still a chance with the fresh sperm. Maybe she'd "let" you BD 24 hours before the IUI, in case 40 is too late.

  • I have seen IUI's anywhere from 24-42 hours past trigger.  And yes, I've always heard that you actually ovulate 'about' 36 hours post trigger. But that the egg can live at least 24 hours.  So you should be fine with that timing.

  • I was concerned about this also.  Different RE's have different opinions.  My RE does it 48hours after trigger.  I got my first BFP having my IUI 48hours after trigger shot, unfortunately it ended in a m/c.  My BFP that I recently got, was an IUI that was 40 hours past trigger.

Try to trust your RE.  I know it is difficult at times but he/she does have your best interest at heart.  I hope this IUI brings you your BFP.

  • Mine was 24 hrs after trigger. If we were doing BTB, they would have done another at 48 hrs. I think that's the only reason they do the 24 hr time is to leave room for BTB if desired. We BDed at the 36 hr mark to hopefully cover our bases.

40 hrs past trigger should be fine. Good luck!
