My coworker just had her baby and apparently the babies hb got very very low and they found out it was due to the cord being wrapped around the neck. Ive heard this a few times, is this common??
I don't know any statistics...but I was born three weeks early with the cord around my neck. It's one of my big fears about being pregnant, even though all turned out well with me
Cords get wrapped around all sorts of body parts. It's only a concern when it's wrapped too tight. Which is rare. From what I've been told the baby can have the cord around their neck and after you birth the head they can usually just slip it off. No harm done to baby at all. If they can't just slip it off they double clamp it and cut it so the baby doesn't have distress from it. I wouldn't let it stress you out if you can help it

In my labor class they said it is very common for the baby to come out with the cord around te neck but in very few births does it actually cause problems. I have no idea myself but that it was the instructor said.
Our Dr was actually just talking about this situation today at our appt. She said it was very common for a baby to have the corner around it's neck or some other body part and that it very very rarely causes any actual problems.

DS' cord was wrapped around his neck and his heartrate was decelerating with each contraction. They wound up pumping more fluid in to my uterus (my water had broken) to buffer him more and he was fine. My best friend just had her baby and the cord was around her neck 4x. So I'm not sure how common it is but it seems relatively so.
Ditto the pp. I just read in WTEWYE that it's common for the cord to be wrapped around the neck or different body parts, but it's not as common for it to be problematic.
My DD had the cord wrapped around her neck 3 times as well, it did cause her HR to drop with each push/contraction at the end. She's a happy, healthy 8 year old today; so I really wouldn't worry too much about the cord.
