1st Trimester

Told your employer yet? How far along we're you?

I'm approaching 9 weeks and am considering telling my boss this week.  I work on tv and the more time I give them to work on a filming strategy, the better.

Anyone else tell before 12 weeks?  I'd still ask the bosses to keep it quiet, and, god forbid, if something were to happen, I'm close enough with them that I could talk to them about it.

Still, I'm nervous.  Not sure how they will take it....

  • I told mine right away, but I am a carpenter/metal worker in the military so its pretty important.  I work with alot of heavy/hazerdous equipment.  And now, I am on admin duty.

  • In your case, sounds like now is as good of a time as any.  I haven't told my immediate supervisor and probably won't for another week or two.  I sit on my butt all day doing admin work so there's really no need.  I did speak with my HR director though because I had maternity leave questions.  I wouldn't think you have anything to be nervous about.  Good luck!

  • I really wasn't looking forward to telling my boss either, but I told him last week (at 7 weeks) because my first doctor's appointment conflicted with a rescheduled event and I knew I wouldn't be able to go to the event.  It was on an off-day, but I was supposed to go and take photos.  I talked with him about it, told him I was pregnant, and he was awesome about it!

He told me I was a great employee and he loved my work, and that if I needed anything I should talk to him about it.  (I fought the urge to ask for a raise, lol)  He also said he was going to have another employee help me with some of my duties when I felt like I couldn't do something and told me not to use vacation time for doctor appointments, but just to go and come back when it's over.

Turns out, his daughter just found out she's pregnant too, so he's sympathetic.  :)

  • Told mine after we saw the heartbeat at the last appointment. My work gets really suspicious and makes "jokes" about people interviewing if they leave during the day for any kind of appointment - they are the weirdest group :)

But I figured it'd be better to keep them in the loop with everything - I've learned if you fill them in on your life, they are much more understanding when you take time off for appointments or feeling sick.

  • I have a couple of different bosses and I told my direct boss right when I found out because she knew we were trying! And plus she will be out on maternity leave herself soon! I am telling my other boss and my "equal" to me supervisor this week after my first appt because I work with animals and I work with a lot of hazards on the job.
  • Well I had a previous loss in October, so I had to tell my boss about that due to missing work for appointments and such. So I ended up telling her this time the day I got my BFP b/c I needed to be in late to work several times for beta bloodwork.

I think it's best to tell when you feel comfortable.  I never waited until 12 weeks to tell anyone with any of my pregnancies (yes, even after my loss.)

  • I told my boss around 6 weeks.  I was in my review and she asked if there was anything we needed to discuss going into the new year...and I just blurted it out.  I wanted her to know anyway so I could coordinate appointments and just in case I got sick etc...

  • I told mine right away because I work with kids that can kick or have behavioral issues.  I wanted to make sure that these kids were not on my caseload.  I would go ahead and spill the beans but try to keep it quiet until you are ready to let the rest know.
  • I told both my employers right away because I lift residents at one and we are going through an exercise at the other one so they needed to know that I couldn't participate.

  • I'm terrified to tell my boss. Doesn't help I've only worked there 1.5 months and well I'm 7weeks and 3 days. I'm pretty much ready to be asked to leave because their a really small doctors office and I'm the ONLY worker, if I'm not here then they have no back up. Maybe they'll offer to hire a part time but I doubt it, HR already told me they have no compation for missed work due to doctor visits. Too bad I work from 7am-7pm everyday I get lunch but I doubt it's enough time to be seen by my OB. I haven't built up the nerve yet even though I know I defiantly need to before word gets back to them.
  • We're not telling anyone really until about 13 weeks, mainly because my sister is getting married this weekend (when I'm 12 weeks) and we don't want to steal her thunder with our big news.  I'll wait until after my family and close friends know to tell my work.  My job doesn't involve any hazardous work, and I don't feel like they need to know any sooner. This is my first pregnancy, and I'm still nervous that something might happen.  I don't have that close kind of relationship with my bosses and coworkers where I would want them to know if something should happen.  Plus, 6 months should be plenty of time for them to prepare for my maternity leave.

  • When I was pregnant with L I didn't tell anybody at work until I was about 24 weeks along.... I wanted to wait until my review, which was supposed to be in the beginning of June, but got pushed back to sometime in August I think.  My boss is pretty laid back and was happy and very accommodating.

One of the guys I work closely with was pretty sure I was pregnant, but didn't want to say anything.  I was a size 14, so I just put it off to gaining some weight when people asked me.  I never said 'no', just that I guess it was the extra food I was eating.  My boss however was oblivious to any of it and it came as a complete surprise.

How's that for waiting to tell?

  • I work from home and won't see my boss in person until March 19 (we work in different states). I plan to tell her in person.  I might have to tell her earlier due to some organization changes, but I will make that decision when it happens.

  • My fiance's mom wanted us to wait until 12 weeks to tell anyone outside of our immediate family but at 9 weeks, I had a placental tear & the dr office called me to come in immediately I was at work. I was emotional anyway because I was worried that I was miscarrying so I had to tell my boss why I needed to leave right away. The ultrasound came out ok but that's when I found out I was carrying twins. I also told the two girls in my immediate office (we have separate offices for the different departments) because they are both mom's & said that I 'looked pregnant' so they had already figured it out. LOL Luckily my boss is really understanding & is ok with me taking any day/time for appointments. :-) I'm glad I did, because I have go go to appointments/ultrasounds almost every 2 weeks. Whew.
  • I'm in an odd spot bc I'm actually starting a new job in a couple of weeks. So I had to tell the new boss, who I barely know, before I was 10 weeks, just to ensure it wasn't going to be an issue that I needed maternity leave 6 months into my job. He's fine with it. This is my last week of work here, and I just told people here today. I actually didn't start with my boss bc I figured it won't affect her, so it doesn't really matter. With my DS, I told work at almost 14 weeks.

  • I actually told my boss today at just over 4w. There are only 2 people in my department and my boss and I are actually pretty close, plus she knew that I was going through fertility treatments, so it's a little different situation.
  • I told my boss on Friday actually. Only because I'll be leaving early on Wednesday for my first appointment. Otherwise I would have waited.

  • I am now 8 weeks pregnant, I told the big boss when I was almost 7 weeks. It was literally a day after I found out. I am a machine operator and work a full week and sometimes I lift heavy stuff. We are a small company so were kinda close knit. I had no problem telling my immediate supervisor- he's a great guy, very easy going. But I was so nervous to tell the big boss- something about it made me feel like I was sixteen years old going to tell my father I was pregnant! I had my very best friend go with me to tell him. He was so happy when I told him, he had a huge smile on his face. He even found it funny that I went up to him with my friend.

My opinion is don't wait but if you don't want anyone else to know just yet its OK. In my case it had been a running joke with people taking bets if I was pregnant because I had been sick a lot before I found out. I couldn't hide it,  everyone knew before I did! lol

  • I told my co-workers and boss pretty early (around 7-8 weeks) because I work in a pharmacy and would possibly have to handle chemotherapy and/or hazardous drugs.
