Does your LO follow directions?

Does your LO follow directions?

If you remember my post yesterday, I'm worried that DS is not understanding/doing things he should be doing at this age.

If you say "close the door", "get that block" or "touch your nose" - would your LO know what to do?

I can practically guarantee Brody would have no idea if I said any of those things.

Re: Does your LO follow directions?

  • Umm, nope! Seriously all he does ALL DAY right now is walk around the living room. He has to be holding a toy when he does this- a Chuck Truck, Percy, or a Leap Frog fridge magnet. But he just started walking 2 weeks ago, so that's all he wants to do!

He doesn't point at things, just screams or grunts till I figure out what he wants. He says Dada and Ready when he's prompted. Nothing else. Sometimes waves bye-bye, but he kind of stopped that now.

I always felt DS1 was "behind" as well- he was a late walker/talker!!

Make you feel better?? Big Smile

  • Yes, like "go get a book", "come here", "touch your nose" "pet the dog". That being said, she just really started taking off with this within the last couple weeks and she is almost 16 months old.

omg yes! lol sorry. Sounds like our kids are similar. He just started walking 2 weeks ago too and that's all he wants to do. He doesn't point either and when I call his name he's usually too busy doing something to look at me. I guess I shouldn't panic yet? ;-)

  • Nope.  We're not there yet.   DS just turned 14 months, but he is not really using any words yet, nor does he seem to know what I'm talking about when I ask him things or point to things.  You guys are starting to make me worry with all of these worry posts!  Smile

Good! Really, try not to worry!!! Even my DCP made us feel like DS1 was behind with speech for a while- b/c there's another girl there 6 mo older than him. She was speaking in full sentences by like 18-20 months! Ours only had 7 words by then!!

Honestly, boys talk later for the most part. Every person I know has told me this!

I try my best to encourage language and reading with LO, but it's extra hard with 2 of them!! If they have no words by 18 mo, THEN I'll worry.

  • Yes, but only if it's something he wants to do like "Pick a book to read", "Drink some more milk", "Brush your hair", "Bring me your shoe so we can go outside."

Stuff like "Eat your veggies", "Go to the changing table", and "Stay away from the power cords" doesn't get comprehended. :P  He really only started to understand more within the last couple weeks, though.

  • Yes, he does follow commands, like, "Go to your highchair", "find your football", "pick out a book", etc.

He does NOT follow commands preceded by the word "don't", though, lol...Like, "Don't do that!", "Don't touch that!", etc.

  • When she wants too she will. She is a hard headed little thing!

  • Not really, unless it's accompanied by a big gesture. Like if he's holding a block, I can point to it, then point to the top of the tower, and say "put the block on there" and he will do it.  If I hold my hand out and say "Can I have that?" he will give it to me. But if I just out of the blue said, "Hey go get your ball" he would look at me like I was an alien, haha!  Actions speak a lot louder than words right now.

  • G is pretty good about it.  But he's also really good about ignoring me, lol.

  • Eh.. when he wants to. "Go find your water" or "do you want this?" generally get a response. Also, "Do you want a cookie?" haha.

However, if I say "what do you have?" he runs in the opposite direction as fast as possible.

LOL, DS does this in response to, "time to change your diaper" & "here, drink some milk!"

  • I am battling my about-to-be 5yr old on this, and that's what I first thought as I opened your post. The idea of the baby following directions never even crossed my mind, lol.

  • Ha ha, not really!  About the only thing he does consistently is sign "please" when I ask him too but that is because he wants something.  "C, can you show me your nose?" usually gets me a blank stare, followed by a naughty grin, and a bolt the other direction.

  • I think A understands me just fine....just chooses to not follow directions.  ;-)  I think it only gets worse as they get older. Wait til we have teenagers.

LOL!  I battle 20 ten year olds everyday on this too!  I think the answer is probably the same for them as for my LO, he does when it will benefit him. :)  Close the door, get in your chair, put this in the trash, let's go bye-bye - all things he likes to do.  Let's change your diaper = immediate melt-down.

  • If I say "stop" in a stern voice, then he'll listen.  If I say "wheres dada" he'll look at DH or "wheres the dogs" he'll look at the dogs.  If I say "get the book" he'll find a book for us to read.  I think thats it.  Everything else he doesn't understand.
  • DS2 randomly surprises me with what he understands. Yesterday at the park, I asked DS1 if he wanted to feed the ducks and DS2 immediately sprinted towards the ducks.

He'll basically follow commands or listen if it's something that he wants to do. Otherwise he'll ignore me, shake his head "no", or run away.

  • She does follow directions. I'm always really impressed by how much she understands, considering she has zero words. All she says all day is da da da da da, but if I say "where's your Elmo book?" she will go and get that specific book. It's crazy.

  • No, DS only knows "Come here" (and he doesn't follow that one too often) and just recently started giving me things he has if I say "Give it to momma."

  • P does understand & can follow directions.  However, she listens about as good as her father does!  Wink
