Cloth Diapering

Bac-out or Tide Free and Gentle?

Just had my baby 2 weeks ago and started using the cloth diapers I have. All were pre-washed before use. After first use and subsequent wash, they were stained right away! I was using Biokleen detergent.Tried washing a second time, same thing again...more stains.

So..now I want to try to either use Bac-out to remove the stains or switch to Tide Free and Gentle detergent. Any thoughts which path is better?

  • I think it's just life that newborn poo stains diapers.  If they bother you, try sunning them.  Do they smell?

  • I had major repelling issues with tide free, so I would definitly avoid that! Honestly, I don't worry too much about stains, diapers are meant to be pooped in, so some staining is unavoidable!  Sunning is amazing at getting out stains, so try to sun them to see if that helps. I have noticed that bad stains (we had a doozy from blueberries) will fade after a few washes, so maybe try washing them with your regular routine again? Good Luck!

  • Do the diapers smell clean? I had to sun a few of my daughters newborn diapers due to stains.  Avoid Tide Free and Gentle, if you want to use something stronger go for regular Tide Ultra.  MANY MANY women on this board swear by it.

  • I agree.... It's probably the content of the new baby poops. Those go away fast and you will be fine again. For the diapers you already have stained throw them out in the sun. You can't go wrong.

For future detergent, I have also heard nightmares about tide free and gentle. Personally I struggle with hard water so I use Rockin Green and love love love it. I use it on all our clothes. The hard rock version for me but they have classic rock if you have regular water.

     good luck!

  • Thanks for all the advice! I did put them in the sun yesterday...it seemed to help mildly. Will try it again though.

I want to switch detergents anyways though because I also have been using the Biokleen for baby's burp cloths and they smell after washing still. She spits up a lot, so I guess I need something stronger?
