Short Cervix?

How short is to short for your cervix? I just came from my 28 week appointment and my cervix has cone down to between 1.7cm and 2.0cm, My doctor really didn't answering any questions so I don't know what this means. I have to go back in tomorrow for a FFN to test for pre-term labor. I just don't know what to expect going forward and I'm freaking out a little with out having any answers.  If you have any exprience with this I would really appreciate some insight.

At 17 weeks mine was at 2.  I found out because I went into the hospital to test for pre term labor.

At 19 wks. my cervix measured at 1.9 cm. I spent the weekend on complete bed rest and went in that monday to my specalist and had it measured again and she admitted me to the hospital to have a cerclage put in place the next morning. I was released from the hospital about 9 hrs. after the procedure because everything went well and I was not having contractions. I'm now 24 wks. and on modified bed rest. I dont know exactly what has been going on in your pregnancy or anything but they may talk to you about having a cerclage put in I'm not sure what they would do for you because you are at 28 wks. and I dont really know the time frame for having the cerclage procedure which is a set of stitches placed around your cervix to keep it closed. Good luck I hope everything works out for you because I know how scary that is when you dont really know what is going on.

My cervic was perfect at 20 week (4.0) and then at 23 weeks it was down 2.5 and then 1.5 at 27 weeks.  Once it go below 2 is when my high risk Dr put me on strict bedrest, progesterone shots weekly, biweekly ultrasounds and prometrium to stop contractions.   It all helped and worked great and I carried my daughter until 37 weeks which is when I started leaking fluid.

Be your own advocate...if your Dr isn't doing anything, demand it!  Your cervix can change quickly and the more activity you do the faster it will change.   My Dr believed it being overly causious throught the whole thing and it made me feel better.  My cervic did shorten a little more while on bedrest but not much, for the most part it held strong at 1.5.

Good luck and feel good knowing that your are in a safe period...yes 28 weeks isn't great to have a baby but every day and week you add is better.

Oh and yeah you are too far along for a cerclage but there would be a huge risk of infection.  I would definetly talk bedrest and progesterone even if you test comes back negative.  I've heard people get a negative test and still go into labor before then two week window.

Thank you all for your advice, I am so nervous now about all of this and my doctor really didn't say or do anything that helped me, I go in for the FFN tomorrow and another appointment on Monday and I think I will push for bedrest and the steriod shots then.

I have had contractions since about 9 weeks along (diagnosed by my previous OB) and I just mentioned it to my new OB last week. He said that at my 13w ultrasound my cervix was over 4cm (I think 4.6) and generally they don't worry about contractions/cervical length until you're below 2.5cm.

Good luck and I think this would be wise.  I wouldn't hesitate to go for a second opinion since so much is on the line, I would try to call a Fetal Maternal Medicine specialist just to ask a question or get a consult.  Mine was at a 2 at 17 weeks and but was never that great to begin with though.  I am taking weekly progesterone shots and have an abdominal cerclage.
