VBAC

question about rupturing?

ok so I know the risk of rupturing but WHEN can you rupture? can it happen at any time? or I guess when would it usually happen, if it were to happen? anytime when you are having contractions? only when pushing?

I am leaning more and more towards trying a vbac but I am admittedly very anxious about the complications....

Re: question about rupturing?

  • I'd say generally it's probably more likely to happen during labor.  But it can happen just during a pregnancy without any contractions.  And it can happen even if you have not had a previous c/s.

All of these situations are extremely rare.  Really, you are more likely to have cord prolapse or a number of other complications that aren't VBAC specific.  (Not trying to scare you- the odds of any complication are VERY LOW, so try not to worry about everything that can go wrong and think about doing your best for everything to go right!)

  • Ditto what PP said.  The risk of rupturing is very low and lower than many other risks associated with childbirth (even for first time mothers without scars).  The information I received from my local ICAN chapter indicated that an actual rupture (where the uterus actually tears and poses a danger to both mother and baby) is actually more likely to occur prior to labor (which would indicate that RCS couldn't even prevent it) and is more likely to occur in a first time mom (unscarred uterus) than a VBAC.  A non-catestrauphic rupture or "window" in the uterus is more likely to occur during labor (but I'm not sure if there is a difference between first stage labor and pushing stage).

For me, once I looked at the actual numbers associated with these risks and compared them to the risks associated with repeat cs I didn't see any reason to go with cs unless some complication specific to this pregnance would indicate the need for a cs.

    GL!!

Thank you for posting this. I also had the same question. I will be checking and see what you get for responses...  I am due in Aug and want a Vbac. But my hubby is saying No because of  rupturing.  I am scared about it. This is the only thing that is making me second guess myself. GL.

If your DH is concerned, bring him to talk directly to your medical provider.  They will be able to explain that the risk is extremely low and that there are very real risks for a RCS too.  All the risks of both are low but to forgo a VBAC just because of risk of rupture only to have a RCS during which you are three time more likely to die doesn't seem realistic.  You and your DH need to make sure your doctor gives you ALL risks and benefits to both so you can make a good decision for yourselves.
