rubbing eyes like crazy

Lo (4.5 months old) rubs his eyes like crazy when he is tired to where it makes his eyes so red. We tried putting him in his crib unswaddled the other night and he just kept rubbing his eyes. He sleeps soooo much better on his belly (naps only). I wish I could put him on his belly at night, sigh...any other LO's rub their eyes???

Re: rubbing eyes like crazy

  • Mine doesn't rub his eyes, but he rubs his face all over my chest while I'm rocking him. He rubs it for so long that he breaks out in what looks like a rash all over his forehead... it goes away after a while or if I put some lotion on it. He uses that to fight sleep.

  • That is funny bc he will rub his face on my chest if getting sleepy to fight it too. he also has a rash on forehead and one cheek. Im still not quite sure what the rash is from. it has been there several weeks. Some days it looks better than others.

  • My DD does this too. We swaddle at night also. Not to scare you, and a little off topic, but studies have shown that babies that go back and forth between tummy sleeping and back sleeping are at a higher risk for SIDS. The same goes for babies who are back sleepers and all of a sudden go to tummy sleeping. Again, not trying to scare you, just sharing some info that I found interesting. I know it's hard when they sleep so much better on thier tummies! I recently had to tell my babysitter not to put DD on her tummy for naps anymore since I found that information.

I think it's just dry skin because whenever I put lotion on it, it'll go away. Depending on how rough it looks, I'll use either Aquaphor or Johnson's, sometimes both.

  • My son started rolling in his sleep of his own volition at around 3.5 months. He now sleeps on his tummy for 95% of his nap and nighttime sleep. Our pedi confirmed that once they can roll on their own, leave them be.

As for the eye rubbing, he does the same thing and is also a master sleep fighter. It's his biggest sign that he needs some sleep - as for whether we can get him to actually go to sleep is another issue altogether.

  • Mine is definitely an eye rubber, but it doesn't keep him up since he's still swaddled for sleeping.  Gotta love his stubborn-non-rolling self.
