Trouble TTC

HSG and prescriptions

I have my hsg tomorrow and my dr prescribed Xanax and tylenol w/codeine. I don't have a history of anxiety or anything. Does this sound a bit overboard to anyone else?

Re: HSG and prescriptions

  • I think it does. I took about 600mg of tylenol before and 400mg a few hours after to help with the cramping and it was fine. I would say the cramping during and after was equivalent to medium menstrual cramps.

However, the nurse did say that a lot of women "freak out" (her words) during the test and you do have to stay relaxed or the catheter will move around, etc. so maybe the doc just wants to ensure.

Ultimately, it's up to you. I think the Tylenol with codeine taken before will definitely cover you. Has far as the Xanax -- have you had IUIs before? I've had 9 IUIs so the whole process was familiar and i was fine - though it was still uncomfortable and a bit more intense than an IUI. If you haven't had IUIs you may want to consider the Xanax but if you think you can handle it and keep yourself relaxed i say it's not necessary.

{But fill the 'scrip and keep it just for fun. kidding! of course ;)

  • I had severe cramping during the HSG, even after taking an OTC beforehand.  Not to freak you out, but mine was pretty painful and I only lasted a couple of hours at work before I headed home to lay on a heating pad on my couch.  If I had to do it again, I would take the tylenol with codeine but probably not the xanax, especially if you don't have a history of anxiety.

Good luck with everything!  It will get you closer to a plan!

  • Hi!  I just had HSG last week.  MY GYN didn't ask me to take anything, but I took 3 Advils before the HSG.  Have you taken Codeine?  It made me sick before...so if you are worried, I would suggest to take some sort of ibuprofen type aspirins.

The procedure is very short and mine was about 15 min and I was quite nervous, but I think Xanax is a bit too much.  My GYN did ask me to take 3 more Advils after and I did.

I hope your procedure goes well!!

  • Thanks ladies.

I've done 1 iui and was fine. I filled the prescriptions :) but the more I think about it the more I think it's overkill for me.

I also coach and have practice a few hours after. I thought about canceling the practice but it's playoff time and the kids are so excited. I didn't want to rock their boat so I'm going to suck up any discomfort and get through it.

  • I am a person with High anxiety and I have to tell you that I had people tell me how terrible the HSG was. I really dont know what they were talking about. I took off of work, took half a pain pill and it was nothing. In fact I ended up more nasueous from the pain pill and wished I had never taken it. I guess if your tubes are blocked or partially blocked it can hurt more, but mine were open.

I had already been through 2 rounds of IVF and there was more cramping from the ER than the HSG. I thought it was a breeze, good luck!

  • I'll be getting my HSG within the next week and my RE wrote me a script for Percocet and Valium. I've taken pain meds in the past and gotten sick so I'll probably just stick to some Advil. I've taken Valium for 2 procedures and I have to take it when I fly so I may take it anyway...just for funsies! ;)

  • Hi!! I have mine on Wednesday. My RE told me to take Valium 2 hours before and some ibuprofen also. I thought Valium was a little overkill, but I trust that he knows what he's doing. Better to not be in tons of pain just in case.

  • Sounds overboard to me.. I'd take the tylenol and skip the Xanax unless medical situations make you antsy.

  • First of all, do not take the Xanax if you are driving yourself to and from the test. Back in my early 20's, I was prescribed 0.25mg of Xanax to help me through a rough spot .I took one pill and was like a zombie; I was literally stoned out of my gourd. If you have never taken a benzodiazepine before, I wouldn't start now. I don't feel like the HSG warrants it. Yes, it can be painful, but it's usually pretty quick.

ETA: Oh my - just realized codeine was also added to the mix. Ugh. I think it's overkill. Codeine + Xanax in someone who doesn't use a lot of meds can be debilitating.

  • If you think it's overkill, then it obviously is for you. I took 800mg ibuprofen (4 pills) and it was still a painful 2 minutes, but the second it's over, I was 100% fine. I don't think 2 minutes of pain warrants such extreme drugs. You can handle it!
