First, I'm sorry I haven't been posting on here lately. Since I graduated in December I haven't had as much time. You would have thought that I might have more now...
My due date was 2/14. I had a doctor's appointment that day and I was only 1 cm dialated and 50% effaced at 11am. Around 3pm I had a small gush of water that was brown tinted after I just went to the bathroom. I wasn't having contractions and I thought that it was a possibility that my water broke and the baby was in distress and released meconium. I also knew that it might just be dry blood from my exam earlier that day. I went to the hospital to check. They did a swab test and determined my water did not break.
Then I went to pee then laid in bed that night and I was having some pains, but I didn't think much of them. I switched sides I was laying on and then I felt a gush of water. I just peed, so I wasn't sure what was going on. Again, it was brown tinted, but there was more than the first time. I wasn't sure what was happening. I called my mom who lives across the street. She came over. I was having more pains, but they didn't feel that bad and water kept trickling out of me. I called the hospital and they said if I was still leaking and having pains to come in. I went into the hospital a little after midnight. I was hoping this was not a false alarm because I was already at the hospital earlier that day. I was really reluctant to go back.
I was in the triage for just a little bit. After they saw my pad and the color it was, they put me into a birthing room. I tested positive for Group Strep B, so they started me on antibiotics right away. I was hooked up to a fetal monitor and another monitor for my contractions. They checked me and said I was 1 cm dilated and 70% effaced. The nurse said she could feel the baby's head, "right there".
I wanted a natural birth, so I didn't get an epidural. The contractions hurt really bad. I was allowed to be off the monitors for 45 minutes every hour. I took the time to shower once and it really helped the pain. At one point I told my husband I didn't think I could do it. He was really encouraging and told me that he got me a trophy. (We visited a friend after having a baby and she told me to just get the epidural because, "you aren't leaving here with a trophy". After that I told him that I wanted a trophy if I did a natural birth). I started to cry. He showed me the bottom part of the trophy while keeping the top part covered up. The plaque engraved read, "Congratulations Julie! First Natural Birth Grant OurLastName" It was really helpful in helping me focus through the contractions. I wanted to earn that freaking trophy!!
At 6:30 I let them check me again. She said I was 5 or 6 cm dilated, but could not feel the baby. They did an ultrasound and saw the baby was breech. At one point I felt the baby do something really major in there, so I think he flipped! They said I had to do a C-Section. I cried and cried because it was not part of my plan. They didn't give me any time to process this. After the doctor confirmed, they sent in the anesthesiologist to explain things to me and start signing consent forms. I was crying through all of this.
The C-Section was weird. They gave me a spinal block which was just a shot that numbed me. It controlled my contractions, but I could still feel things. The anesthesiologist seemed a little concerned because he kept saying I shouldn't feel anything by now. Eventually it kicked in, I guess it just took a little longer for me. The surgery felt weird. You can feel things, but no pain. When they took the baby out I felt so much lighter. It was a really strange feeling. They had the NICU team there since he had released meconium inside of me. They were able to suction him before he cried, so he did not inhale any of it.
Grant Matthew Jackson OurLastName was born at 7:28 he was 7lbs 11oz and 20.5 inches long.
