Teeth brushing help

How do I get him to let me brush his teeth??? He used to let me just fine but since he was sick last weekend he has refused to let me anywhere near him with a toothbrush. I'm living with my parents at the moment and they re not much help. They ne'er brushed our teeth as toddlers, they think it's rediculous to brush DS' s teeth. I tried to pin him down (in a nice way of course) and do it but he shuts his mouth like none other. I can't get in there. Then he starts crying and of course grandma and grandpa refuse to let this happen so they butt in and that's the end of that. How do I go about this? It has been a week!!! :-( no luck here

Re: Teeth brushing help

  • Have you tried letting him do it? DS started pushing back on the teeth brushing when he entered the super fun phase of "I WANNA DO IT!" I hand him the toothbrush and he will put it in his mouth and move it around a little (mostly chewing on it), and then I'll kind of help guide it around in there, with him still holding it.

It's not a stellar job, by any means, but it makes me feel a little better and avoids one more fight at the end of the day when, frankly, I'm so done fighting. lol

  • ugh, I wish I had ideas. I'm trying to get my LO to let me get the toothbrush in her mouth. She will take the tb and chew on it...i suppose that's better than nothing, but I really try to get in there, consistently! *sigh*

  • Have you tried a cheap electric version?  My Husband and I use them and gave our son one around 10 months.  He usually just chews on it but I think it does the trick and since the bristles move on their own its fine if he just holds it there.  Just a suggestion that works for us!  He's 18 mos now and we use a non-fluoride kids toothpaste. Good Luck!!
  • Are you using toothpaste? When A started refusing to let us brush his teeth, we switched from brushing with water to using the Earth's Best strawberry banana training toothpaste.  Now, he can't get enough. He let's me brush and then he sucks on the thing for a few more minutes.

  • DD was a little older when we went through something similar. What worked for us was taking her to the store and letting her pick out 2 new brushes so she can choose which we brush with. I also turned it into a game and got all excited and talked about tickling her teeth. The last thing we did is let her stand on the sink (while we hold her) so she can watch in the mirror as we brush them. All these things combined worked and we have a solid routine now. We also let her have a turn brushing after we do. She pretty much just eats the toothpaste (non-fluoride) but, whatever works. Good luck!

  • I have the Colgate toddler toothpaste and have used the infant toothpaste before too. I think I ll give the electric toothbrush a try. It has been so frustrating !! I have let him do it on his own before and in the past he has been ok with chewing on it. Now days it is not like that. He just grabs it and chucks it on the floor :-/ great suggestions though ladies. I will be trying them today

  • DS loves to brush when I am so that helps- they also have an electric toothbrush that comes with stickers so he can decorate his own. GL!
