Spencer Patrick's birth story + PIP

Thursday, February 23 was like any other day late in my pregnancy. I was uncomfortable and swollen. There was nothing different to really take note of as I went to bed at regular time at 10pm.

At approximately 12:30am, I woke up from a very uncomfortable position where my lower back was pulsating and I felt like I had to poo. I was back and forth to the bathroom for the next hour where each time I wiped I saw a slight amt of bright red blood. I knew it was not coming from the back of me, and it had mucus with it. More and more mucus and more and more red blood. I pooped 3 times successfully and each time I felt worse.

I finally googled ?bloody show? on my phone and got the warning that the blood should be pink/brown and not bright red so I called my on call OB. Waiting for the call back, I decided to pack my hospital bag finally, and the diaper bag w some pjs and a blanket. At this point it is after 2 am. When I got the OB on the phone she said not to worry bc my undies weren?t saturated w blood and that if it would make me feel better I could come in for observation. I said I would think about it and hung up.

The pain in my lower back got intense so I finished packing the bags and leaned over Chris sleeping in bed and simply said ?I?m in a lot of pain.? And his eyes shot open and he sprung out of bed and we got to the hospital. It was just after 3am.

In the car I watched the clock as waves of lower back pain rushed over me, every 2 minutes. Chris dropped me off in my messy hair, glasses, pjs and holding a bed pillow into an empty ER and parked the car. The triage nurse and cop just stared at me. I smiled. They asked if I was in labor and I said I didn?t know. Then they were like ?did you drive yourself???? lol I looked scary.
L&D came and got me right away. The triage nurse held my stomach for a while and confirmed it was rock hard and I was probably having contractions. I was so oblivious. It was now 3:30am.

We got put in the small, transitional room in the maternity ward where I was checked. The bright red blood killed my cute VS maternity undies and I was dilated 5 cm. They informed me the pain and subsequent red blood was from tearing my uterus when I thought I was constipated. Oops. They wheeled me right away to my delivery/recovery room and I was checked again. 8 cm. The pain was getting way worse. Every contraction had me starting to wave my hands in the air and curse. I couldn?t grab Chris? hand. I didn?t want to. I became non-verbal after a while and just shaking my head violently as to say ?I can?t do this anymore.? It was about 5am.

I was now dilated 10 cm. I wanted my epidural. Bad. The nurse leveled with me that if I didn?t get one I could have my baby right then. I said I didn?t care. I wanted it. We waited for me to finish the IV and for lab results to come back AND THEN they woke up the anesthesiologist and then I got it. The pain I was in already was insurmountable. I had to lean forward, sitting up, shoulders down, still through about 3 sets of numbing contractions to get it. The Dr even said to me ?Do you really want this?? prick. The nurse holding the front of me later said I looked just like Uma Thurman in Kill Bill in all my anguish during that ahah.
Then I got happy. I got collected. I called my parents and I called a coworker for a sub. Rainbows sprouted and cherub choirs sung. Life was beautiful. It was about 6am.

Then it became time to push. I had no idea the OB was not present for this until the end. At this point my water broke in a large gush all over my bed and kept gushing during the pushing. I was pushing and pushing, his head crowned. I had to pass him through my pelvic bone. And then? the PAIN. The epidural meant NOTHING. I was SCREAMING OBSENITIES. I felt everything. The pressure SUCKED.

Then, all the sudden, the room got bright and warm and the dr was there. They transformed my bed to a shoot of sorts, I pushed about 3 more times and he was here! (In the process I tore to the 3rd degree and needed a ton of stitches right after I passed the placenta.) Born face up, cone head. His arms and legs were flailing and my first impression of him was that of a tree frog haha. Chris cut the cord and the placed him right on my chest. It was 7:13am on Friday, February 24. He was weighed at 8 lb 3 oz and 20? long. Not bad for a baby born at 36weeks and 6daysCool
