Cloth Diapering

traveling with CD

I have only done a 2 day trip with DS, and we just took prefolds and covers which worked great, doing laundry when we got back home.  I will be flying across the country to visit my parents when he is about 7 months old and staying for 2.5 weeks.  My mom is all for me bringing my CD and using her machine, but it is a HE washer, and I'm unsure if I'll have to do some major experimenting to get the wash routine right.

Any tips for the flight, etc?  I'm considering doing biosoakers, or even just using a cover over disposables...

  • It's really not hard with an HE machine. Most people have no issues with the normal cold rinse, hot wash, cold double rinse. Make sure to pack your detergent.

How long is the flight? If it's just a couple hours, I'd just put a doubler in and use cloth. If the airport is an all-day affair, it might be easier to just use sposies. If you're worried about losing luggage, you'll want to pack the diapers in carry-on.

  • We traveled for 3.5 weeks with DS when he was about 4 months.  We chose sposies for the plane and drive (6+ hours one way, then a 17 hour drive two ways) but we stuck with our CD's for the actual trips and I'm so glad we did.  It was awesome to never have to buy dipes and laundry wasn't bad.  We also went from an old top loader to HE FL's and I just made sure not to add our Calgon and to cut the detergent in half.  No issues =)

Oh and I thought about biosoakers, asked around on a bunch of different sites and 90% of people said they had better absorbency with actual cloth versus the biosoakers.

  • I'm not sure why you wouldn't CD on the plane... Just pack a diaper bag like you normally would if you were going to be out for the day.

  • I use the Flip inserts with covers for traveling.
  • When we travel, I always pack a small rolling suitcase carry on with just CDs and DD2's stuff.  I would be so upset if my CDs were lost, and it would be a pain if they were delayed.  I also make sure I have an extra change of clothes for me in there too.

I assume, your LO will be on solids when you go.  We have used and liked the grovia disposable inserts when we traveled. They would be easier to deal with (related to poo) if you are traveling all day.

We have an HE washer and have never had any issues.  We do a quick wash on cold no detergent, followed by a warm heavy duty wash with detergent and the heavy soil loads and extra cold rinse options.  NBD

  • when we went to FL, riley's carry-on was filled with diapers. i had stuff for her to play with in my carry-on :) it was fine, she did poop on the plane but the changing table wasn't that bad and i just brought my wet bag to the bathroom with me. we were able to CD the whole week and it was fine!
