Awful Restless Leg Syndrome - any ideas?

Basically, whenever I lie down to nap/sleep, my restless leg syndrome starts up TERRIBLY  - and then of course, I think about it and get annoyed, which just makes it worse.

I usually get up and walk/stretch, but that isn't doing the trick.

Anyone else experience this and have a tried & true remedy??

  • I found that taking any kind of anti-histamine will make it act up even worse. Not sure if you are taking any of that but just thought I'd share. Sorry you're having this. I had it pretty bad around 30ish weeks.

  • This is going to sound nuts but it helped me (not necessarily on days where they were unbearable, but days when it was just annoying uncomfortableness)...put a bar of soap under your fitted sheet on your bed down where your legs are.  My MIL suggested it and I looked at her like she was nuts, but I was willing to try anything, and I swear it helped.

  • I read somewhere to increase dairy.  It seemed to help me.

  • I feel like I get RLS all over my body.  It woke me up last night and I tossed and turned for nearly an hour when I broke down and asked my husband to rub my back.  What I really wanted was for him to rub my legs, but I didn't have the heart to ask for that in the middle of the night.  So he rubbed my back and it worked wonders.  I also propped my legs up on pillows and managed to go right to sleep after just a little human contact.

  • I forgot to mention this last night. Being anemic will make RLS MUCH worse. Once I started taking the iron pills it got alot better.

  • I've heard the soap under the sheets thing works for some crazy reason, too.  I haven't tried it (for some reason I get restless legs on the couch, but not in bed - must be the new mattress, lol), but I know I've read that recommendation as well.

  • I had RLS before I got pregnant, and it's been constant since day 1 of my pregnancy. Due to the severity of it, my doctor prescribed some medication for me. It's not the most ideal situation, but without it...I would never sleep, ever. It's that bad. And it's getting worse now that I hit the third trimester...ugh.

Anyway, since I've had this for almost 20 years now, I've read a ton about it. For RLS due to pregnancy, sometimes increasing folic acid and magnesium helps. Increasing the dosage for them doesn't do a thing for me, but it might for you. Hope this helps!

  • I'm lucky to have avoided this symptom so far but several women in my prenatal yoga class have complained about it.  Our instructor suggests the 'Legs Up the Wall' pose.  I've done the pose for other stretching (though without the back pillow pictured) and like it.  Others say it's somewhat helpful for RLS.
