Anyone else already starting a newborn bw stash?

I just bought my very first wrap for the newbie! (didy Color Grown Ellipsen!)

I know I want a long Gira snow rainbow and a Gypsy Mama Stretch for the early days and I'll need something baby blue or obnoxiously pink!

Has anyone else started their stashes? Do you have anything specific in mind?

Re: Anyone else already starting a newborn bw stash?

  • Are those all wraps?  I'm not into BWing, mostly b/c my kiddos are huge (start at 9.5lbs and are seriously 20lbs by like 2.5-3 months) so they're a bit hard to wear.

I may  buy some type of wrap this time though b/c I'll be BFing this LO (FF the other two)... any recs for the best BFing wrap?  I've read the moby wraps with the rings are great for BFing and for BWing bigger kids.

  • I have 5 onesies, the crib bedding, a crib mattress, a diaper bag, and one cute stuffed animal from zulilly.  :)  So, yeah - I've started a stash already.

  • I am crocheting a baby blanket. This one is white but I'll do a blue or pink one when we find out what we are having. I also bought a specialty onesie that has a design applicable to our family. There's a used baby clothing/item store nearby and I almost went there yesterday but really until I know the gender of our baby, I'm holding off. Just a few more weeks!

Mobys are GREAT for newborn stage, but not for heavier/bigger kids. They get stretched out too easily. A woven wrap is best for bigger kids. The one OP referred to is woven, and there are lots of others.

I have a Moby, a cotton gauze wrap for when it is warmer and I'm still in the moby phase, and an Ergo. Really hoping for a woven this time around.

    They are all wraps :)

A stretchy wrap (like moby) is really nice for newborns up to about 25lbs. A Moby or the moby ring sling is going to be thicker. (and hotter) Personally, I love the Gypsy Mama Bali Baby Stretch instead of a Moby. It is more expensive, but it will hold value really, really well and you should be able to sell for only $15 - $20 less than you paid new.

The GMBBS is a much thinner wrap and it still has the benefits of a stretch while being more supportive. A stretchy is also more forgiving for new wrappers so you don't need perfect technique to get a nice comfortable carry. I learned to nurse in a wrap in a GMBBS. :) You can snag one used on the baby wearer FSOT, but newer prints are tough to find!

    https://www.wrapsodybaby.com/shop/stretch.htm

Again, just MHO, a moby (and a bjorn and a moby-like ring sling) have a really limited life, especially if you have big babies. A GMBBS will last a bit longer and I adore the softness and stretchiness for a newborn. I can't imagine anyone suggesting a moby ring sling for a bigger kids and almost wonder if they meant Maya ring sling, which I know has a really dedicated following. I'm not a big RS fan, but that is really just personal preference, I know some only use ring slings! (I would not buy one new, they are usually around $30-$35 on FSOT and already broken in!)

    https://www.mayawrap.com/shop/maya-wrap-baby-sling.html

If you really want the most bang for your buck look into wovens. More specifically I would look for a thinner cotton wrap in a long size. (I am a big fan of 6s or 4.6 meters) A thin cotton will be reasonably cool for Sept, strong enough to hold baby into toddlerhood and versatile enough for you to learn front carries to nurse in and eventually comfy back carries. I routinely wear my 2 y/o and have even wrapped up my 5 y/o when we ended up in a super crowded convention and he was too tired to walk. :)

The girls over at The Baby Wearer are fantastic. They have multiple forums where you can learn all about carriers, fabrics, how-tos and even the FSOT forum. Once I really got into wearing my second I was hooked. You just can't beat the convenience.

All I want is a snow rainbow. If I get one of those, I'll be happy.

I just emailed Nora last night! She said Pinkletink's SR pre-order should be opening second or third week of March and ship at the beginning of June!

I would love a broken in one from FSOT, but I think I'm going to jump on the pre-order so I know I'll have one for the squishy!

That was it, a Maya RS.  Duh.  I'm clueless.

Thanks for all the info love!

  • I have a moby & Bjorn from the first two.
  • I think only those of us that are obsessed with baby wearing are going to get the "bw" reference ;)

I just bought a taitasi from a friend and I'm ISO a 3.6 storch Leo  in natur. I have a moby that I hate so I'm hoping a woven will change that (I hate it bc it wears me.... I'm only 5'0" and I lose weight too fast PP... Last time I dropped to 87lbs!). Anyway if I can't find one for a steal i'll just buy new.

Im also wanting an onbu from Japan. I hear they're good for petite mamas.

I already have a linen grad psling (might look for a used colors so I don't have to adjust them for the two kids), a couple hotslings, a pikkolo, a BB (that I hate), the moby D (that I hate), DH's ringsling (Italian brand and it sucks IMO), a peanut shell... Can't remember what else...

  • Since I have a child who has to be worn every.damn.second of the day, I consider myself somewhat of a BW specialist by this point. Here are my recommendations:

    1) moby wrap for the first few months. There is a hold that is great for breast feeding. Watch the YouTube videos to find the best holds.

    2) for that in between size, and to keep in the car for short trips into the store, you'll want an easy to put on, easy to put LO in. I like the snugly for this. It's not intended for long term use (like I said, just use it for trips into the store, not to walk around the zoo for the day). It allows the baby to face in or out. It is super easy and quick to put on. It doesn't have a waist support, so if you do wear the baby for more than an hour, you will feel it in your upper back. DD is about 14lbs, and I still use this with her for quick trips. This is a crotch dangling wrap, so for LO's hips, don't use it more than an hour a day.

    3) ergo for once they reach around 5m of age. You can use this up to 45 lbs. I can wear DD all day long and not feel it. Supposedly, you can BF in it, but I haven't been successful yet. I have ther ergo performance (get it on eBay and save $30 bucks).  Easier to put on than the moby, but it has more snaps, so it's harder to put on than the snugly, but by no means difficult. I wish that she could forward face in the ergo, but you can't.

Dont waste you time on slings. I have a balboa baby sling and it is the most worthless piece of junk ever. DD hates it, it's uncomfortable to wear. Just an all around failure.

  • I hated my Moby but loved my ring sling and my Ergo.  I wear my daughter in the Ergo almost everywhere we go.  I have never tried a woven but am debating trying for this baby.  I just never felt I was wrapping it correctly.

  • I have a Moby (although in September it might be too hot to use), an Ergo, a Babyhawk Mei Tai, a Sakura Bloom ringsling and a Zara wrap conversion ringsling by SBP.  I'm trying to convince DH that I need another Sakura Bloom if this LO is a girl, since all of my baby carriers except my Zara RS are gender-neutral in color.  We'll see if I'm successful.  :)

As a side note, I still wear DS once in awhile, even though he's 26 pounds at this point, so baby carriers are useful beyond the infant stage (if you want).

  • I have my Moby and Eurgo that I will be using. I have a New Native sling but it never felt right. It was a hand-me-down from my SIL and I think it was too small for me.

  • I wrapped Isaac until he was about 20 months old (and 30 pounds!!) so I already have a small stash.  We've got a homemade moby (I prefer stretchy wraps for the newborn stage), a bbSlen Turkish Delight, a Girasol Ambrosia, a boba, and I'm about to buy a ring sling for this LO.

I'm obsessed with wrapping.  I don't see how mamas get anything done without one!

  • Ah, I was wondering WTH bw meant!

  • I'm pretty much set. I have 3 ring slings, 2 wovens (a gira and a didy), three buckle carriers (a BabyHawk, an Ergo, and a Connecta), a stretchy wrap, and a mei tai. I'm pretty much set. Though I wish I could shop. I am hoping for a girl this time around so I may splurge on a girly ring sling or woven if I can afford it. But I am going to be staying at home so money will be reeeallly tight for us. Big purchases are carseats, diapers, and clothes (if its a girl).

Honestly I just have to say this only because I dont want any new moms to buy into this mentality. I respect your choice to not babywear, its not big deal of course. But I have large babies too. Mine was 15 pounds at 2 months and was gaining a pound a week by then. I started out using a ring sling which is a one shoulder carry and when he was bigger than 25 pounds I switched to the Ergo or the woven wrap with front carries and back carries. Honestly I still wear my son on my back and he is 35 pounds with NO discomfort. If you are using appropriately supportive carriers then you should not have discomfort (assuming you have no existing back problems). So even if you have big babies please do not believe its impossible to wear your baby (or toddler) because that is simply not true.

I used my Moby with my son but I will most likely go straight to wovens this time around. I really want a shortie but its up to the budget.

I am so jealous of your taitasi! I had one and it was a victim of my stash churning.  :( I have been ISO a non corded strap one to replace it and haven't been able to snag one yet.

If you like the idea of moby but not the size, check out the baby k'tan.

I agree on the sling. I have never been able to find a pouch style that I felt secure with.

For BF'ing in the Ergo, have you tried pulling your breast out the top of your shirt and bra versus the bottom? I am large busted and this is the only way I can nurse in a carrier. In an Ergo you would have to cover the top for privacy but in a woven wrap you can pull the rails high enough to cover everything modestly. All my shirts are Vnecks for this purpose alone.

If you are really sold on forward facing look into the beco gemini. I have heard really great things about them!

  • I just bought another MT. Its a NHT silk. I have a huge stash already from DS & a Burgundy Pfau & Marigold that I used maybe twice with him. I really used the KP's more when he was big enough. I'm excited to get the wraps out for this kiddo :)

I have a night rainbow RS too that hasn't gotten love in several weeks, but I absolutely loved it when DS was 6-11 months.

Mere I don't think I'm feeling something I can't adjust. The XS was it fits sizes 0-4 which is a wide range IMO. If I spent the money on it and it's too loose I'd be SOL. I live in Europe so returns aren't really possible.

Plus the storch is less than $100 new (actually just saw one on FSOT for 35 GBP but it's dyed pink) . I think it'd get a lot more use as DD was born 8 lb5.5oz and I'm expecting the newbie to be similarly sized.

I saw a silk taitasi on FSOT on TBW the other day... Like $115 I think. Can't remember what the straps were though...

  • I love my Ergo!

I have never found a sling or wrap that felt secure enough for me.  Maybe I just wasn't using it right, but either way...it didn't work for me.
