Preemies

Come in: Any Mamas who had 33-34 weekers

So we're in the hospital right now.  My water broke two days ago.  We finished the steroids shots.  I was on Mag until the steroid shots were completed, now they're waiting to see if I will go into labor, otherwise they will induce on Wednesday at 34 weeks.

Their most recent growth scan was at 32W, 6 D and they were estimated to be 4# 11oz and 4# 14 oz--with an 11 oz variance.  We're hoping they're at least 4 something # when they're born.  We're optimistic, but just a little curious to hear from other moms who've had babies around this gestation.

Re: Come in: Any Mamas who had 33-34 weekers

  • I haven't posted on this board yet but have been creeping for the past few weeks, I had preeclampsia and my son was born by emergency c-section at 34 weeks and 3 days. I had one steroid shot while hospitalized the day before. He was 4 lbs 1 oz born screaming! :) He spent one week in the NICU, we were very fortunate that he had no major issues, he had a feeding tube placed in the beginning because he couldn't take all of his feedings, but wound up getting it removed within a few days and was quickly taking a whole ounce each feeding. He was sent home on oxygen, 1/32 the lowest setting just because of the altitude where we live.

He will be 1 month old tomorrow and is doing great, he now weighs 5 lbs 6 oz and I honestly don't think he knows he is a preemie. :)

Good luck to you and your little ones!

  • I had mine at 33w4d at 4#15 and 5#4.  I had gotten the shots a few weeks before.  I had pPROM at 33w3d, and ended up with a c under general for cord prolapse.

DD was in the NICU about 2 weeks, DS a month.  It was about a week before they moved out of isolettes into open air cribs, then the hang up was figuring out how to suck/swallow/breathe so they could eat (BF or bottle).  DD picked it up right away.  DS ended up having issues with As&Bs while eating.  He had to be side-laying with Dr Brown's bottles in order to eat well without issue (or falling asleep while eating).

It was hard, but they are doing awesome now.

Husband has cystic fibrosis. I'm a carrier. We did TESE, IVF, ICSI, and PGD. After two failed IVFs, we were blessed with our twins.

  • I had my twins at 33 weeks. Abby was 5lb. 4oz. and Lil was 4lb. 5oz. In our case, weight didn't matter as much as I thought it would. Lil was smaller, but her lungs were more developed than Abby's. Abby needed assistance (both a breathing tube and later a CPAP) for almost the first week. Lil needed no help breathing.

Both needed to learn how to eat, and that took them a while. Lil had issues with apnea and had to stay in the NICU longer than Abby because she kept having episodes.

All in all, they were in the NICU for 28 and 33 days. Now they are nine months old and are doing really, really well. Good luck. I hope that you have a short and uneventful NICU stay.

  • My twins were born at 33w6d (at 11pm, so 1 hour short of 34 weeks!) DS weighed 4lb 11oz and DD was 4lb 3oz. They did great and were only in the NICU/special care nursery for 2 weeks. They both came home at the same time at 36 weeks gestational age. They both needed a little breathing help, DD was on a vent for a couple hours and the CPAP for about a day and DS was on CPAP for about 6 hours. Neither had any issues and our NICU stay was uneventful, they basically just had to learn to eat.

They are now 5 1/2 months old and you would never know they were preemies. DS is in the 75% for height and weight for his actual age and DD is in the 25%. And they are meeting all their milestones.

Good luck! I hope you are able to keep them inside until next Wednesday!

  • Hi there!  So glad you got the steroid shots!

DD was born at 33w5d at 5# 5oz and 12 hours after my water broke.  She spent 9 days in the NICU and was breathing on her own right away.  She was on the nasal cannula but kept pulling it out and that was the first thing they got rid of.  She had a feeding tube but only to remove air from her belly.  The last few days in the NICU were just because of her bili levels.  She mainly just needed to learn how to suck/swallow/breathe.

That weight seems good for twins!  I hope that all goes well with your delivery!

  • My ds was born at 34 weeks.  My water broke early fathers day and i was induced later that morning.  DS was 6lbs 9 oz.  He did stay in the nicu for 13 days because he needed to learn to suck so he could eat.  Other than that he was breathing and everything fine on his own.  I hope all goes well for you and baby!
  • My water broke unexpectedly with my first at 34 weeks, so no steriod shots were given. She needed a CPAP for a couple days, and was a feeder/grower in NICU for 2 weeks. Doing great!

My cervix started dilating at 32 weeks with twins. Got mag and steroids. Babies born at 33 weeks, but didn't need any help breathing. Stayed in NICU for 3 weeks for feeding/growing. Doing great!

    Good luck!

  • I had ID twins at 34w0d. The u/s I had that morning said they were 4#2oz and 4#3oz. Both weighed more, Ian was 4# 10.5oz (instead of 4# 2oz) and Jack was 5# 0.5oz (instead of 4# 3oz). Both are doing well now, some gross motor delays, but otherwise healthy. Ian was in NICU for 8 days, Jack for 23 due to breathing issues and contracting an infection. GL!

  • I went into pre-term labor at 33wks 5days and was given both steroid shots. My daughter was born at 34 weeks weighing 7 lbs. She had no trouble breathing, had no trouble sucking from a nipple, and was able to regulate her sugars (I'm diabetic so they were concerned) and temperature on her own. She spent 9 days in the NICU because she would occassionally stop breathing while drinking her bottle. The doctors sent her home with an apnea monitor which she was on constantly for the first few weeks and then just at night for 2 months later even though she stopped having apnea episodes after she was a month old. She has not had any developmental issues at all - physical or mental. Good luck to you!

  • I see your twins were born.  I hope they are doing well.

My girls were born at 33w 4d after PTL.  I was only able to get one steriod shot.  Ava was 4lb 5oz and Lauryn was 5lb 5 oz.  She was on CPAP for a few hours and then needed nothing but room air.  They both spent two weeks in the NICU for jaundice and as feeders/growers.

Two and a half years later you would never know they were preemies.  Good luck with your twins!

  • I had my baby girl at 34w3d in December 2011. I was getting into the shower, and my water broke on the tile floor...

They admitted me, gave me fluids, penicillin (hadnt had time for the GBS test yet), and gave me the first steroid shot to speed up her lung development. 12hrs later, I got the 2cd steroid shot, and they administered mag sulfate bc my contractions were too intense for the 2cd steroid shot to be able to work. after 20hrs of labor, the following morning, they gave me pitocin to speed up the contractions they had slowed down the night before (ridiculous, right?). after 4 hours of pushing (she was turned wrong, then stuck) - out baby girl came. 6lb, 5 oz 17.5in. she got 8, 9 on her APGAR tests, and spent 4 days in the nursery to be monitored and to get antibiotics because my water had been broken for so long before she was delivered. since her birth, she has gained 4 lbs, and 5in. she is really quite perfect, and we were really lucky.

my doc has no idea why i had pret-term labor and spontaneous premature rupturing of membranes. its a mystery, because i literally had a perfect pregnancy up until my water broke!

good luck with your little ones!!!
