First congrats to all the mamas here, I can't wait to rejoin the group.
So my dr. will discuss inducing me on Tuesday with cervidil. I have been dilated 3cm for the past 3 weeks and my dr. said I would be a good candidate I was induced with my son, but only had pitocin, so this is new territory for me.
I was wondering if you were able to leave after the two hour period of the insertion of the cervidil to go home and let it work or if you had to remain at the hospital. How far dilated were you when you had it put it? Did it work? And how fast did it work. Could you eat after it was put in? (last time then didn't let me eat from the time I entered the hospital till after I gave birth 30 hrs later). I know and plan to ask these questions to my dr. at my appointment Tuesday morning, but am just trying to anticipate my plans (trying to keep my son's schedule as consistent as possible). Thank you for any help or advice you have.
Re: cervidil questions (from someone hoping to join you shortly)
I was given Cervidil during my induction. I don't want to scare you with my story, but I don't want to give you a puppies and rainbows version either. Keep in mind I've heard of many women who haven't had an issue with Cervidil.
After the two hour wait you are allowed to eat, but you are not allowed to leave the hospital. Immediately after it was inserted correctly (the first "OB" aka med student didn't insert it correctly..) I had super intense contractions less than a minute apart. My body overreacted to the medication and they had to remove it after a few hours and they gave me treb. to slow the contractions down. This apparently happens to a very small group of women.
My cervix when I went in for the induction had not dilated at all and did not dilate during my 14 hours of labor. During my c-section they discovered DS had dropped but had "gotten lost" and was nowhere near the birth canal (where he was I have no idea, I never thought to ask). He wouldn't have been born vaginally even if the Cervadil had worked.

My Cervidil experience:
Water broke Saturday around 5 am. Called OB at 9 am to get checked (I thought I might have peed, since I was having no contractions or anything).
12:00 noon-- 1 cm dilated. No contractions. I was not "in labor". Since my water had broken, Dr. decided Cervidil was necessary to help me dilate.
2:00 pm-- Cervidil in. You cannot go home after because you have to lie down for 2 hours after getting it inserted. It's a scratchy thing that looks like a little piece of gauze with a medicine on it. After 2 hours, I started walking around, trying to get things pumpin' down there. It can stay in for 12 hours... so they shoot for that.
6:00 pm.... getting crampy
8:00 pm... ouchie. Still not in "labor," pain caused by irritation due to Cervidil.
10:00 pm... waaah! It hurts! My middle is killing me! Told DH to take me home. I no longer was interested in giving birth. Asked OB for a C-section. She laughed in my face.
12:00 am... was given Ambien to help me sleep because I was in SO much pain and they thought it could still be possibly another 24 hours of labor.
1:00 am... Nurse: "why are you still awake??" Me: "OMFG it hurts. Drugs!!!" I was given Nubain to help a little.
2:00 Cervidil out. Dilated to 6cm. It had done his job. Contractions like whoa. No Pitocin necessary.
3:00 Epidural. Ahhhhhh... belissimo. Good night!
6:30 am... OB: "Kathy, I'm going to check you now." I was asleep. She checked. Baby was coming out! Time to push! I felt nothing. Thank you, drugs.
4 pushes. No tearing.
6:59 am... I had a son!
I had wanted to avoid drugs, but honestly, the Cervidil was a ***. The drugs were wonderful, but I did feel groggy for days. I had a hard time getting the hang of breastfeeding, but we never had to supplement and my son is huge.
When speaking to my OB after, I told her that I never wanted Cervidil again because it caused pain. She pointed out that it did it's job... my cervix opened, I avoided pitocin, and was able to deliver successfully. She has a point. It sucks, but it worked!
eta: my mom had a c-sec. bc her cervix stalled at 1 cm... I wonder if the Cervidil saved me from the same!
OB said I could eat, but keep it light, like a turkey sandwich or something.
Good luck!

Cervidil didn't do a thing for me. I had a dose overnight, a full day of pitocin, another overnight dose of cervadil, another full day of pitocin and never dilated more than 2.5.
But I was only a fingertip dilated to begin with. And like PP, my DS was in a position that would have resulted in a c/s regardless of any drugs.
