TARGET RETURN POLICY

Just an FYI...If you don't have receipts for returns from your baby shower, they have a policy that you can only return $70 worth of merchandise in one years time per person (and you get store credit, which isnt a big deal).  However, the amount goes over $70 you can have your significant other or other person come with you and return some things too.  I never heard of this, and was a little annoyed, but it worked out since I had hubby with me.

Re: TARGET RETURN POLICY

  • What... did they purchase the stuff from your registry? Is so they should have used that as the receipt.

  • Even at that I've always found Target to be pretty receptive to returns. I mean, they aren't as great as Walmart but considering how difficult some places can be, I appreciate that they'll let you make returns without a receipt, etc.
  • Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but pretty sure this varies by location.

The Target I go to just mentioned this to me for the first time last week, so maybe it is a new policy. It could still vary by store though.

  • This was true for me when I lived in DC. However, as pp stated, I just had my hubby, mom or family members take things back after I hit the $70 mark. No problems.

If you purchase something yourself on a credit card and can't find the receipt, they can look up the purchase that way and return your money (vs. store credit.)

  • I was pretty disappointed about that too! I was at the store alone, so I couldn't get DH to return stuff.  People pretty much just got me what they wanted & ignored my registry.  I was VERY grateful for the gifts, but Target was a pain to deal with for returning.  I ended up taking a few things back to Walmart (even though I knew they were purchased at Target)....oh well!

  • I just ran into this problem on Friday, but the girl gave me a way around it. She got me as close to the $70 as possible (she put the credit on a gift card) and then I had to exchange the remaining items for something from the same department. It was kind of a pain in the a$$ but at least I didn't have to send the stuff back with someone else.

  • This is a corporate policy and the employees cannot do a thing about it. It isn't something that can be overrided on the system either. I worked there last Christmas season and let me tell you it is frustrating on the employee side too! I think it is ridiculous that corporate doesn't give more flexibility.
  •  The people coming to my shower don't have a near by Target, but I'm glad to know this!

At Kmart (I used to work as a Customer Service Desk Supervisor) you can return without a receipt for in store credit. However, you will get the lowest ticketed price for that item. Just be sure to tell the person at the service desk that it was from a baby shower. Most Kmarts won't do any gift returns so far away from Christmas and all (most returns can only be returned up to 3 months after purchase even with a gift receipt), but if you make sure they know it's from a baby shower it should be kosher. My manager's said no gift returns without receipts after a certain date, but when we asked our district manager he said the exception was birthdays, weddings/anniversaries and baby showers.

  • When I went to return things at Target she wanted me to print my purchase log for my registry even though some of the items weren't on the registry. She said this would allow me to not have to put the returns towards that $70 yearly limit...

  • As long as you have a registry with them the $70 limit does not apply. Just pit off your bought items list (even if the item isn't listed on there) and they will use your registry barcode to do the exchange. I just did this a week ago and was able to getting a lot of stuff and got $200 on a gift card.
