EFB question from FTM

First of all thank u ladies for all ur support and answering my questions since month 2 o my pregnancy. My question is I am using a breast shield more than I'd like to admit. But I am. Can my body not tell what and how much to give LO bc of this?

Re: EFB question from FTM

  • I used one for two weeks and my supply was fine. I ended up pumping full time because of all the latching problems. She wouldn't do it without the shield and I got fed up!  I wish you luck.

  • The lactation consultant did tell me that using a shield can decrease your supply a bit, but if you are end, then your body is still making enough for lO. Maybe it is more a concern if you are already low supply.

I used a shield with both kids in the beginning - dd about a month and ds one week. The easiest way I found to get off the shield is to use it for the first couple minutes, unlatch, remove, and then relatch on quickly. That way you skip the initial latch which is the hardest on your nipple bc the baby is hungry and sometimes the baby gets frustrated initially bc they are hungry and want the easy latch. After a few days of being used to nursing without the shield I was ok to do it right from the beginning.

    Good luck!

  • I think a lot of it depends on how strong your LO's suck is! My DS is like a leach so I had no problems with supply.

One thing I did do was pump 3 times a day to make sure that my breasts would be completely drained in case he wasn't doing it.

    1 lap, 5 IUIs = 4 BFNs and 1 c/p
    2 IVFs, 2 FETs = 1 BFN, 1 c/p, 1 ectopic and finally a sticky BFP in May 2011!

    1 FET in Aug 2013 = BFP!

  • I used one for about 10 days and started weaning her off it and we've been NS-free for almost a month now. I was only able to do it because 1) my nipples were starting to protrude (they were flat) 2) DD's mouth got bigger and could latch better 3) she was ready.

A lot of women on the BF board use nipple shields for months and have no issues with supply. I didn't have any issues, but that may not mean much since I didn't use it for that long.
