Taking the bottle - habits change?

DD has been bottle fed since being in the NICU.  Of late, it seems like she doesn't want to be held while fed.  Is this normal?  This morning I gave her the bottle in her crib - drank it in 5 minutes flat.  Sometimes during the day she will sit in her bouncy chair and have her bottle, also in 5 minutes.  Is this normal, expected?  She sometimes will hold her bottle, but is in the lazy camp on this.

She is showing interest in my glasses of water.  Should I be thinking about cups soon?

Re: Taking the bottle - habits change?

  • At our 6 month appt, my pedi suggested we start introducing the sippy cup. She said the sooner we get rid of the bottle, the better (since sippy cups push the liquid in the back of the mouth away from the teeth, as opposed to bottles, which puts the liquid in the front of the mouth). Isaac doesn't understand the sippy cup and thinks it's just another chew toy, so we aren't getting rid of the bottle any time soon. He's also toothless, so I'm not worried about it. He's also interested in my glasses/bottles of water, so I help him with it. He just lets the water fall out of his mouth though. Silly guy!

  • DS does the same thing.  If we give him a bottle and hold him, he will push us away.  If we lay him on the floor and give him the bottle, he will drink it in about 5 minutes.  I think its because they are discovering so much everyday, that they want to be a little more independent.  We give him a sippy cup after he gets his dinner.  He ends up being soaked with water, because he doesn't realize he needs to swallow.  He loves it though and its giving him practice.
