How sick would you or your kids need to be to cancel a vacation?
Ty has been sick with a cold that started with a barking cough last Sat, he has thrown up several times from all the coughing and drainage. Brianna started the barking cough Thurs night and now has a cold. I started feeling like crap yesterday and definitely am sick today. Now both kids are complaining of ear aches :-( We are supposed to fly out to Orlando on Tuesday. I am thinking about taking them to urgent care today for the ear infections, unfortunately there is no pediatric urgent care in our area so our office recommends a very busy emergency room. I refuse to go to the ER for ear infections since the one other time we were there when Ty was a baby we waited for 8 hours. When my grandmother fell during B's baptism and was rushed to that ER by ambulance, she waited on a back board for over 4 hours before my mom checked her out and drove her to a different facility.
Tyler has been on edge, screaming at everyone and every thing. Brianna is being the whine queen. I am used to the kids whining and having more issues than most kids, but they are driving me insane today. Would you consider cancelling or postponing?
Re: How sick to cancel vacation?
There isn't an urgent care in Syracuse anywhere? I'd find the nearest one and go there, get antibiotics and start them ASAP. When is the last day you can cancel without losing $??
We were planning a Caribbean vacation for this last week but ended up ditching the idea because I didn't think the kids would handle a long flight well. Good thing we did because Evan had a double ear infection and probably pneumonia and it kicked in on Sunday when would have already been there!
There are a couple, but they don't staff pediatricians. I am going to take them to one, but it is totally going to suck.
Our airfare which is the bulk of the expense is the only thing non-refundable. Our hotel is past the refund period, but they only collect one night if you cancel. Besides, we bought travel insurance which covers illness. Not something I would have purchased before kids, but with 2 little ones, I am thinking well worth the expense right now.
I just texted my sistet who lives in Bville.
Yeah. North Med Urgent Care. It's near the intersection of Buckley rd and west Taft road. You can get into it by either road at that intersection. We've gone there a couple times
There's a pediatric urgent care opening around here! Yay. Too bad it's not opening when you need it. Did you call your pediatrician? I don't know where you go but ours has a doctor on 7 days a week for emergency purposes. Maybe you can get in?
Sorry you're dealing with this!
Yeah, we are going to go to North Med. But they don't staff pediatricians which can be tough when dealing with a special needs child. My pedi office has an absolute do NOT take your child there rule, but I am not going to Upstate's ER today for just ear infections.
Upstate Golisano Children?s Hospital is opening an urgent care for kids 0-21 at Community General. It is a bit of a hike from where I am, all the way out on Oneida Lake in Cicero but it will be worth the drive should we ever need them in the future.
I've cancelled 2 vacations - both a day before we were supposed to leave. Claire had an ear infection one time and I didn't want her ears to hurt on the flight. The other was recent because of a death in my family. BUT...I was flying Southwest both times and didn't lose any money cancelling. My parents live down there for half the year so it wasn't like we were out a once in a blue moon vacation.
Take them to urgent care. I was there yesterday for myself (ear infections and a throat infection - strep was suspected but I told them don't bother to test since the treatment for the ear infections would be the same.) The person I saw worked in a peds office before working there. She also gave me ear numbinf drops she said would be good for anyone in the family if "You know, you ever have to fly." All in all I would not hestitate to take my kids there if their peds office was closed even though they aren't specifically for kids. NO WAY I would go to an er for ear infections.
Good luck.
Will a regular urgent care near you not accept children? Or you just want a pediatrician? I would think an ear infection can be diagnosed and treated by an urgent care dr that is not a pediatrician.
Personally, I would get my kids to urgent care, start them on antibiotics if warranted, and go on vacation. But I have limited vaca time and even if I lost no money on moving the vacation, I have to have time off approved so I would be wasting vaca days. So it would have to be a pretty bad illness to cancel. If they get started on antibiotics, they should be feeling better in a day or 2.
Sorry, didn't consider that. Can you get in to the pedi first thing Monday morning? They should be on the mend by tuesday/Wednesday if you can.
OMG that's awesome for us! We live in the city on the south side (not the ghetto) so that's really good to know. Thanks for the info. I hope you get things figured out!
We, too, are super excited about the pediatric urgent care! Our pedi's office is open 364 days a year, so I am thankful for that as well.
I am not sure if you should cancel, BUT if you think no one will feel good on their trip, then I would cancel.
I am sorry that everyone got sick right before a trip:(
Went immediately after my last message, I was waiting for the triage nurse to call back when I was posting before. It was HELL, the kids tollerated the waiting room for about 45 minutes then Brianna started melting down. Tyler held it together for about another hour past B's breaking point. They were both screaming, kicking, hitting, flailing... Brianna was biting everything in sight, her hand, the chair, my hair... It was hell. They put us in a room just over 2 hours after we got there, then another 45+ minutes in the room. They kept screaming and Tyler was all out lossing it. Finally I opened the foor so the entire place could hear what was going on in hopes the staff would move a little faster, Dr came in 5 minutes later. The kids were seen, ear infections X 4, he prescribed augmentin. Then we waited another half hour for our paperwork. Screamed, kicked, hit all the way home. I got Ty in his swing and he immediately calmed down, B is upstairs with DH. I just gave them motrin and am about to head out to the pharmacy.
They were fine yesterday! They were both pretty much all better. Turns out they were in MIL's hot tub while I was out shopping yesterday. I wonder if that was the catalist for this.
OMG that sounds awful. I'm glad you were seen and they have their prescriptions. I hope they're both feeling better soon!
My thought is that it probably wasn't the best idea to put <40lb kids who a just getting over fevers in a hot tub.
Tyler also lost the 2+ lbs he gained last week. We usually weigh him with nothing on, we haven't wieghed him this week, but he only weighed 37lbs with full clothes and sneakers at the office. I am going to weigh him again tonight before bath. He hasn't eaten much and has been throwing up.
~~Edit- Tyler's weight must have been a fluke because he weighed 39lbs when we got home. Strangely, B's weight was right.~~
I still don't know about our trip. I would like to postpone it by 2 days. I'll have to look into it. If we do, we will have to cut out a day at Disney and the day we were going to go to a museum in Orlando. I don't want to cut out our beach day, the kids have been asking to see the ocean for as long as I can remember.
The last time we were there, Tyler was about 3 months old and screaming unconsolably. I had taken him to our pedi who told us to go straight to the emergancy room from his office and that he would call ahead. Tyler then cried for three hours straight in the waiting room (he hadn't stopped screaming even for a moment for over 6 hours) before he had nothing left and fell asleep with me pacing the waiting room with him in a sling. By the the time we were seen he had taken a 3 hour nap in the sling and was happy and fine for the ER dr. We waited for over 6 hours in the waiting room, they said not to feed him! He already hadn't eaten in hours, I was mad because they expected me not to feed my 3 month old in the 8 hours we were there. I fed him when we got in the room though.
Now that I think about it, it would have been before the children's hospital opened. So maybe it was different then. And they did make my 88 yr old grandmother wait for hours on the backboard after being brought by ambulance. Some thugs were shooting each other, so she had to wait the trama pts to be treated first. So my mom put her in the car and drove her to Oneida and she was in and out in under an hour.
