Silly question about pack n plays

Please don't judge me and think I'm not very bright when you read my question.  :)

I want a pack n play with a bassinet feature, but all the ones that I've seen that say it has a bassinet seems to not have what I had in mind.  Is the bassinet just that higher level of the pack n play that you can take out later?

When I imagine a bassinet I think of a small basket type thing - similar to the changing stations you find on the pack n plays?  Or do they mean I can use the changer area as a bassinet?.....

 I'm so confused.  Please help.

Re: Silly question about pack n plays

  • There are a million different configurations so you just have to decide what will work best for you. MOST playards have the mattress that can be raised up towards the top for an infant but that's not a bassinet feature.

Graco is the most common brand. They have some with a reversible napper/changer (one side is the napper and you flip it over for the changer) that hooks on at the top, some with a napper that vibrates AND a seperate changer, some that have storage pockets on the side for things like diapers and wipes, some with a toy bar, some with a canopy...

    yeah, totally overwhelming!

  • Truthfully, every model of P&P is different, but you can definitely find one with a bassinet, if that is what you are looking for.

When I purchased mine for my daughter, I bought the following: https://www.toysrus.ca/refinement/index.jsp?categoryId=2582968&f=PAD&fg=Brand&fv=Brand+Name+Secondary%2FGraco&fd=Graco

It has a bassinet, (referred to as a 'napper'), and it was a miracle cure to helping her sleep when we were out of town.

  • I'm a FTM and it took me a while to figure this out.  The pack and plays with the bassinet feature the bottoms moves to different levels as the baby grows.  It seems like what you had more in mind was a pack and play with the newborn napper.  The newborn napper looks like a little bassinet that attaches to the pack and play.

Here is a link to a pack and play with the newborn napper:  https://www.amazon.com/Graco-Newborn-Napper-Elite-Vance/dp/B005UV0UU4/ref=br_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3THJMPX1XDF9P&colid=AUETU2NCBFWL

    Good luck!

  • Thanks everyone!  Still a little confused, but getting there...

What I had originally thought of as the bassinet is considered the "newborn napper" on most P&P. But I read somewhere that the napper feature wasn't exactly the best for baby.

so I guess I'll just go with a P&P with the mattress near the top that is removable/adjustable.

Now, I play on having baby sleep there for a little while before we move him/her to the nursery crib.  That should be safe right?

  • We bought the Graco Silhouette PnP for baby. She will sleep in our room in the bassinet feature for the first couple months, then off to her crib :) The PnP has a higher level mattress that can eventually be removed (as well as the bassinet) to become a simple playyard/sleeper. Ok, to make sure I got this right.  The bassinet feature on this link is the small basket thing on the right?  Is that where you plan to have your baby sleep for a while?

Sorry, I need someone to take me to a store and actually point things out to me.  I found the people at my local BRU to be not so helpful.

  • I got chicco one with no bassinet. I think that feature is stupid they can just be in the pack and play with the mattress raised up.

Yes, the bassinet is the small basket on the right. She will sleep here (in our room) until she's big enough for the crib. Hopefully she doesn't outgrow the bassinet before she's ready for the crib but if she does, then i'll just put her in the top level of the pnp. Don't be sorry, it's good to ask these questions if you're not sure. Btw, I was able to score our pnp for only $90 (discontinued pattern) so look around if it's something you're buying yourself.

Hi. Sorry to intervene, but the changing station on the right is not for baby to sleep in.

  • Sorry. Answering from my phone is not working all that well.

All pack n plays have a bottom - this is where baby's can stand, play, look out, etc. From the time the baby is born until that older stage, you can raise up the bottom to about 10-12 inches below the top of the pack n play - this is known as the basinette. Though not ur typical small cute basket type basinette, that's just what Graco calls a smaller sleeping space than a crib.

In the link you are looking at from target, the raised up part on the right that has a place for wipes, diapers, etc. is the changing station. It hooks on the top and is in no way intended for baby to sleep. It's not very secure and baby could easily roll out of that. That part is kinda hard anyway, though it is padded slightly.

This one has the changer that flips over for napping. This is dropped down and doesn't hook on the top rail:  https://www.gracobaby.com/Products/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductID=1813443

There are deluxe pack n plays that have both a changer station AND an actual small basket (usually called a sleep cove or napper) that sit side by side on top: https://www.gracobaby.com/Products/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductID=1814333

www.gracobaby.com is a lifesaver!! I've had lots of experience with pack n plays while working as a sitter and with my own DD.

    Hope all that helped!!

  • We have two PnPs that we used for DD1.  The "raised floor" of a PnP is called a bassinet by many manufacturers. When you "take out the bassinet" from a PnP, that means you're removing the hammock-like feature that holds the mattress at a higher level and putting the mattress at the lowest setting.

The tiny little sleep area you're looking for is called a newborn napper on Graco models. They can't be used very long due to a low weight limit and aren't actually recommended for nighttime sleep (or unsupervised napping) because of the suffocation hazard due to the padded sides (it's essentially the same as a bumper in a crib).

  • i got a pooh pack&play from sears that had good reviews that had a "removable bassinet feature" that was basically just a pack & play at a higher level. i chose that because the ones with the nappers just didnt seem like a lot of room, and seem really sketchy. mine also has a changer that you can move out of the way and everything. i was going for a "crib" but not really a crib type deal for when baby is born.

  • Thank you everyone!  I really appreciate your help and your patience with my inability to catch on quickly!

The raised level is the bassinet.

Most PnPs come with a changer (small basket like thing that hooks to the side).  Some come with a napper (looks similar to changer, but is softer).

What I thought was the bassinet was actually the napper.  I had read the napper wasn't exactly the best for baby.  So I knew to avoid the napper, but was confused about the difference between the napper and the bassinet.

But I got it now.  Thank you!!!
