Birth Stories

Addison Rose is here!

I was induced on Thursday, February 23rd due to a sudden rise in my BP because of pre-e.

I went into the hospital at 7:30am and got settled into my room. At about 8:30am my doctor came in to break my water and start me on pitocin. When he checked me I was 2cm dilated and 90% effaced (before labor started). They started me off on a very low dose of pitocin because they said they wanted my body to do a lot of the work on it's own. After about 20 minutes I started having light contractions that were noticeable but weren't consistent at all. After about 3 hours the contractions were stronger but were still just starting to have any type of pattern. At that point the nurse raised the dosage of pitocin slightly and we waited to see what that would do. About 2 hours later I started to feel very strong contractions and they were definitely consistent (about 3 minutes apart). When the nurse checked me I was only a stretchy 3cm and completely effaced which kind of bummed me out since I thought I would be a lot further along because of the amount of pain. About 20 minutes later I was begging for an epidural (I tried to last as long as I could without one). At about 3:30pm I was given an epidural and all of the pain in the front of my body went away. I told the nurse that I could still feel some pain in my tailbone and she said that the epidural just hadn't kicked in yet. Well we realized that my pain was worsening and relieving in intervals of 1-2 minutes. At that point the nurses were switching shifts so of course I got a new one (all the nurses were great but I really loved my original one). She checked my cervix and in a matter of 1 hour I had gone from 3cm to 7cm (when she told me I literally asked her if she was kidding). SO had gone to the bathroom and was a little surprised that when he got back we told him we might be having this baby within 2 hours. kept feeling a ton of pain/pressure on my tailbone and the nurse just kept saying "It's normal, it's just the baby dropping onto your tailbone". After a few minutes I started telling her that I felt like I really needed to poop (sorry) and she didn't really think much into it. I asked her to check me and when she did (about 35 minutes after the last time) we found out I was 9.5 cm and she could feel the baby's head. She was really surprised that I dilated that quickly and was telling me I had time left. At this point I REALLY felt the urge to go to the bathroom and I felt like I was holding it in which hurt.

Finally about 10 minutes later I started to push, that was when I found out how ineffective my epidural really was. My legs were numb but I could feel almost everything below my hips in my groin. I was in the middle of pushing and the doctor stood over me saying that he was going to do an episiotomy (I started to freak a little after that) he numbed me with something but I could still feel some pain and all the pressure of the procedure. After pushing for about a total of 25 minutes Addison was very close and after 3 more consecutive pushes she was out. After that the doctor had a"curveball" with my placenta (not sure what it was) and he started to sew me up.

Everybody was amazed at how short of a labor I had. I started contractions around 8:30am and Addison was born 4:29pm. Only 8 hours which is crazy since I'm a FTM.

Addison Rose was born 4:29pm Feb. 23 weighing 6.5lbs and 19 inches long. She is perfectly healthy, breastfeeding great and we couldn't ask for a more amazing daughter.
