Baby's Initials

When choosing names, does anyone care what their initials spell out? We have chosen our baby's first name, Stephanie. Yesterday, I thought of Teagan for a middle name. Then it just dawned on me that her initials would be S.T.D. I don't think I could give her those initials without setting her up for humiliation in school. Silly? Or no?

Re: Baby's Initials

  • I had a first day of school project, when I taught 4th grade, that involved initals- I questioned a kid when I was walking around the room and saw him writing A S S.  Yep, his mom thought it was funny to do that to both him and his twin brother...  Younger years it wouldn't matter, but in jr high or high school- she may not be very happy you chose that inital sequence.

  • Id avoid it. I know I initial alot of things at work and high schoolers can be evil. Some people never use their initials but some do

  • Yup. I can hear the arguments now. "Mom, why did you do this to me!!!! I hate you!!!!!!" Best to avoid it :)

  • I never thought of it, but if it spells something bad, you may want to pick another MN.

  • The first name I loved was Benjamin.  Then FIL pointed out that his initials would be B.O.  Now DH won't go for it anymore.

  • I love monograms, so I think about initials regularly.  In fact, when I got married, had I kept my maiden name, my initials would have been SHT.  That was a little alarming to me, so I kept my middle name and now I'm SET.

DH's family has the tradition of the initials spelling a real word.  While he doesn't want to talk about names until after our next u/s when they confirm the sex, the name I've been using when I talk to the baby would give her the initials HAT.  (And I might have even considered the fact that Hattie would be a cute nickname some day.)

  • If it spelled something really offensive or left room to be teased constantly, I would avoid it, but S.T.D and A.S.S are probably 2 that are quite high on the list to avoid.  Others like B.A.D or B.U.M, I wouldn't be too concerned about.  Mostly just the ones that would haunt lifelong rather than in elementary school.

DD3 will be G.A.H >>>which I may find myself saying about her once in awhile - especially during the teenage years.

  • Yes, I do think about initials. As a PP said, monograms are pretty popular these days, so I even think about how the initials will look with first, last, and middle (the way a 3-letter monogram is usually done.) I was very startled last weekend to see my dear friend from college sporting a cute little diaper tote with the initials HEL on it.

  • I normally am not concerned about a word or something, but I would probably avoid anything that spelled a body part, or something related to sex. I *might* avoid STD...

  • I would probably avoid STD.

Now, I my be a little biased but I think it woudl be great if you switched the names and used Teagan Stephanie.  :)

  • I too agree, avoid STD at all costs.  I do like this idea though, and lets you keep both names (lots of folks go by their middle names).  My LO will be AMJ regardless of sex, and we like it.  I have decided the nickname will be AJ also regardless of sex.  Good luck!!!

  • My mom and I had a discussion about this when I was a teenager. I had scrutinized my name and discovered my first name has 6 letters, middle name has 6 letters, and my last name has 6 letters. I was playfully giving her a hard time about this, and she said in a very serious tone, "I'm so sorry honey... all I cared about was making sure your initials didn't spell anything bad or dirty. I never thought to count the letters!" Oh mom...

  • yes...best to avoid it..
  • I definitely think of initials. Our last name starts with K-so one name we took off the list was FCK. I also don't want "KK" as an initial b/c it's too close to KKK, but my h thinks that I'm weird for thinking that.

  • I definitely pay attention to initials.  The initials STD....yikes!!!

I almost didn't choose Benjamin Michael because of the initials BM. I'm still having a hard time getting past it.

  • I would definitely avoid it!

  • I would def. stay clear of the S.T.D. initials....I do think it is funny that our LO will be Madelyn Christine - MC and my mom and I were having the nickname conversation and she said - oh I will just call her MC Evans, like MC Hammer!

I actually thought it was quite hilarious and had never thought of that.

  • My married initials are JEW... Sometimes in the work force you have to use your initials. This can be awkward when it means something. I can not tell you how many times people have asked me if I am Jewish because of my initials. (I'm not, however I do like the religion)

I once dated a guy who's last name was a M. So I always said if we had kids they would be Michelle Noel and Michael Nicholas. Then I could call them my little M&Ms.

  • My cousin's initials were PMS until she got married.  I mean, girls can change their last name easier than guys can since a lot do when they get married.

My last name starts with G so there are a lot of 3 letter words that I wouldn't want to give him - DOG, PIG, LEG, HAG, etc.

  • I do consider initials as I'm coming up with names. I would definitely avoid STD.

  • Yes. My MILs initials are FAG. A friend of mine from school had KKK for initialsuntil she married.  Both hate them. That was a major consideration for me.  Our son is JAH and our daughter will be ECH. Her middle name is Catherine-Ann and I only agreed if we hyphenated and put Catherine first...so EACH wouldn't be her initials.

  • I too am struggling with this DH thinks imthinking about it too much, glad to knpw im not the only one. For our girl name we picked out which we both LOVE, would spell out GAG. Still undecided what to do. Our boys name would spell out JAG that I can live with!

  • I'm a teacher and there are times we use initials for passwords on the computer or something.  I definitely kept it in mind with my daughter.  Our last name starts with an "S" and we knew we wanted her first name to be Addison.  We made sure her middle name did not begin with an "S".  That being said, her initials are A.L.S.  I had an uncle who passed away from the disease ALS in 2003.  At first, I was unsure about giving her a middle name that would make her initials ALS.  However, after speaking with my family about it we decided that it was fine.

  • My husband LOVES the name Brooke but our last name starts with J and there was no way I was going to give my daughter the initials BJ. Ironically, my initials are BJ but I married into it, and didn't choose it. I wouldn't choose to do that to a little girl.

    Her initials will be MCJ.

  • The name we decided on is Tinsley Violet. My mom pointed out to me that her initials are TV. This does not bother me at all and this would not make me change the name at all. My friend on the other hand, has a little girl and her initials spell GAS. May have avoided that one, but Grace Ann is so pretty and I know how it feels to be sold on a name :)
