Pregnant after IF

Hysteroscopy before IVF?

Did you have hysteroscopy just before IVF or FET?  What did your doctor do?

If so, was it your successful cycle / do you think it made a difference?

I am curious b/c I hear that some clinics do hysteroscopy before every IVF cycle.

TIA!

  • I had one before IVF 3 and am now pregnant with twins! :)

The procedure was quite uncomfortable.  Basically, thee disturb the lining of your uterus to promote cellular growth - "increase the stickiness".

My clinic only does it if you have one or more failed IVFs, but when I asked about it on IFV it seemed that this is becoming standard for many clinics.  Especially, with FETs.

  • I had one just before my first IVF because there were fibroids in the uterus that needed to be removed so it wasn't just an exercise, but it did work :)

  • I had one before my first (and successful) IVF, due to having a couple polyps they wanted to remove, along with some other assorted stuff, so the embryos would have a better chance of sticking.  Since it was my only IVF, I can't say how big a role it played, but aside from delaying my cycle, it obviously didn't hurt anything.

  • My old RE did one before my planned IVF cycle with him. I found it odd that I saw "reopening fallopian tube" on the insurance bill, since the HSG proved my fallopian tubes were open. Also, tubes do not matter for IVF! His lack of communication made me switch REs. So I guess my point is, get very clear info on what your RE is going to do during the procedure. He said he was just going to "look for tumours/obstructions", but he opened the tube and also took a sample for a biopsy.

I then switched to my new RE (much happier now!), but his standard practice is also to do a hysteroscopy.

    Good luck!

  • There are 2 types of hysteroscopies - a diagnostic one, which is usually done in-office without anesthesia and not meant to actually fix a problem but rather diagnose it or a surgical one, which is usually done under anesthesia and is meant to actually fix a problem (such as remove a fibroid or a uterine septum).

It seems like overkill to do a diagnostic hysteroscopy before every cycle, though it's not a bad idea to do one overall, especially if a problem with the uterus is suspected. Also, a diagnostic hysteroscopy isn't going to improve the chances of pregancy, it's only going to help identify a potential problem.

It's possible that perhaps you are thinking of an endometrial biopsy and not a hysteroscopy. Some doctors like to do an endometrial biopsy before the start of every cycle because it is believed to initiate an immune/inflammatory response that can aid in implantation. Many people, especially with previous failed cycles, have a good experience with this. Good luck!

    IUIs #1-3 (1x unmedicated, 2x Clomid) = 2 BFNs, 1 m/c at 7w3d
    IUIs #4-6 (injects) = 3 BFNs
    IVF #1 = BFN
    FET #1 = BFN
    FET #2 = BFN
IVF #2 = BFP, b/g twins lost at 20w due to partial abruption/PPROM
    IVF #3 = c/p 5w2d
Long-shot Clomid/Prednisone cycle before next IVF = BFP, our beautiful, healthy girl born 6/26/13!

Good clarification blueberries!  I assumed she was referring to an endometrial biopsy. :)

  • Thanks ladies, but no, I actually did mean hysteroscopy.  I did have a minor therapeutic procedure in the office without anesthesia.  Just a little resection of arcuate tissue, nothing much.  Much like endometrial biopsy or anything else that roughs things up in there, supposed to help w/ implantation from what I understand.
