High-Risk Pregnancy

New to GD what are you eating?

I was curious what you are eating for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.  Since I just found out I have GD I would love some ideas.

Re: New to GD what are you eating?

  • This isn't meal specific, because I mix it up a lot.  I eat lots of peanut butter, eggs, salads and string cheese for my non-carb items.  For carbs, I eat bread, tortillas, fruit, and fiber one brownies (90 calories and delicious).  I also like greek yogurt for breakfast and snacks.  For me the key is read the labels and to measure.  I google a lot of the nutritional content of various items, and that helps a ton.  You would be amazed at what you can find.  Some of it you have to take with a grain of salt, but for the most part, my blood sugar numbers correspond with what I think I've eaten.

FWIW, it's gotten easier as I go and the beginning was a lot to take in! :)

  • before I lay out what I eat here are my carb allowances

30 for breakfast and all snacks

45-60 for lunch and dinner (I tend to hit the higher end)

for breakfast I have either a piece of peanut butter toast or a bowl of either plain cheerios or rice chex with 2% milk

morning snack I have a no added sugar chocolate carnation instant breakfast

lunch is usually and sandwich, either peanut butter, turkey and cheese, or hot ham and swiss with a little bit of pasta salad or some chips. My other favorite is egg salad. if I don't want a sandwich I make tuna salad with crakers.

afternoon snack is either a granny smith apple with peanut butter, cheese and crackers, or string cheese and a small banana.

dinner is whatever hubs wants, a few days ago we had spaghetrti and meat sauce, last night was pizza... tonight I'm making orzo with chicken and lemon.  I just adjust how much of each food I eat and typically add salad to whatever if I want to eat more.

bedtime snack is either a piece of peanut butter bread, an apple with peanut butter, or Chobani has a kids version of their greek yogurt and I'll eat that with some bear naked peak protein granola added to it.

  • the only real rules I was given was to balance carbs and protein, no juice or pop unless it was diet, watch out for sweetners, and no fruit before lunch

  • I'm allowed 30 carbs for breakfast, and 45 for lunch and dinner. My snacks can be around 15. I also try and eat a minimum of 25g of fiber.

I've been going protein heavy in the morning, just because I seem to have high fasting numbers, even while on medication.

I usually start with Egg, bacon and whole grain toast. Or Steel cut oats with flaxseed mixed in for fiber and turkey sausage.

Snack is peanut butter on celery, fiber one bar, or cottage cheese with avocado slices.

Dinner I'm still trying to figure out what works best for my family and I - but it includes lots of protein and veggies usually. I will say I eat black beans for protein, and fiber - it helps.

  • I eat cheese.  A lot of cheese.

For breakfast, I have a couple standard meals- Breakfast is my toughest number, so I don't do very much experimenting.  (This is my second pregnancy with GD and I was diagnosed ten weeks ago, this time, so I have a pretty good idea what works for me.)  I usually have either eggs, bacon, and a hashbrown or an english muffin.  Every once in a while, I make a half serving of cream of wheat as my carb.  I also add cheese to my eggs or make a breakfast sandwich with cheese sometimes.

For snacks, I usually have a slice or two of cheese and a piece of fruit or a fruit leather or applesauce.  When I am really craving sweets, I'll have the cheese and a cookie.  Oh, my morning snack is often cheese and a cup of coffee with hazelnut creamer.

For lunch, I usually have leftovers, or if I'm stuck in town, a couple pieces of baked chicken from the grocery store deli and some fruit.  And cheese.

For supper, one of my favorite meals is chicken alfredo.  I have perfected a two pot method for the pasta, chicken, broccoli, cauliflower, and my homemade sauce.  I pile on the chicken and veggies and have a reasonable serving of pasta.  The sauce is carb free (unlike tomato sauce), so my numbers are great.

I feel like I "cheat" on the diet because I do give myself treats and splurge on certain meals, but I work really hard to keep my carbs within my limits.  The super high calories of the alfredo sauce aren't a big concern because I still haven't managed to gain any weight...At 23 weeks, I am down 13 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight.

  • I eat a lot of the same things as people above. I too don't really worry about calories and fat as I can only do so much dieting...;-)

Breakfast for me stinks. I am allowed 30 carbs, but if I got anywhere near that my numbers would be crap. So I usually have some combination of eggs, turkey sausage/canadian bacon, cheese, peanut butter. I can have one small piece of high protein bread or low carb wrap with this. I can also tolerate fruit if I don't have the bread.

Lunch and dinner are the same for me. I tend to have a lot of meat, starch, veggie dinners. I can't do casseroles or anything that I can't really control my portion of starch. I can do tacos(the hard shells have less carbs), pizza on top of low carb flatbread(try to get the lowest sugar sauce possible), salads(I even add a few croutons for crunch), dreamfield pasta, eggplant parmesan(go easy on the bread crumbs and I bake it), soups/stews(just watch the noodles, I don't eat any soup with noodles).

Snacks for me are cheese and crackers, cheese and fruit, veggies and dip with some fruit, sometimes I get some of those meat sticks and have that with crackers, peanut butter and some sort of carb(or with apples, so yummy), no sugar jello with a little bit of whipped cream with some protein, etc.

  • Oh...I just wanted to share that once, I was in a situation where the only option for food was an all you can eat pizza/pasta buffet.  I ate a TON of salad and the toppings from ten pieces of pizza on three crusts.  (They were small pieces.)  Although it felt a little wasteful, my super topped pizzas tasted great and my blood sugar was just perfect afterwards...I chose a pizza that had a white sauce, vs tomato sauce.
  • This is was really helpful for me to read so I will share my usual daily diet.

I get 45 carbs for breakfast:  Bacon egg and cheese on wheat bread or wheat bagel with one cup of milk ( I still have my coffee with half n half and 2 tsp raw sugar and it doesn't effect my blood sugar)

I get 30 carbs for snacks:  I eat 8 toast chee crackers if on the go, or half a sandwich with peanut butter or any meat I want. If I want something sweet I eat planters nutrition sweet and salty mix or emerald nut breakfasts on the go.

I get 65 carbs for lunch: again I have another sandwich, I add a cup of soup, most progresses are fine and either a piece of fruit or milk.

I get 55 carbs for dinner: last night I had a hot dog on a wheat bun, 27 shoestring fries and ketchup. That was a splurge though. I find that I like the dream field pasta and had spaghetti the other night with meat sauce and a small salad.

I eat a lot of whole wheat bread.  If I stay within my carb count but I eat white bread, my numbers are through the roof!
