VENT: I hope our kids don't turn out like this when they are teenagers...

UGH...this is me hoping my kid will have some sense of human decency when he is a teenager.

My teenage cousin just shared on his Facebook this picture some jerk off created of the 9/11 buildings (the one where a plane just flew into one) and on it the Kool-Aid man jumping out the other side saying "OH YEEEAH".  Maybe some of you saw this floating around on FB.

What bothered me the most is he wrote "Still funny!" when he reposted it on his wall.  Seriously?  Anyone else remember how you felt when you first heard about this or watched it on TV?  I get he is a teenager, but at what point did he miss the sensitivity of what that event did to the people that were killed, their families, and the war that followed it?  NTM our mutual cousin serving in the Marines is getting shipped to Afghanistan in a month or so.

Now pondering the thought of if this is how our parents felt about us when we were teenagers.

  • The fact of the matter is that teenagers now were in preschool when 9/11 happened.  They probably got told something happened, but it's doubtful they could really understand the emotions behind that day.  Yes, it is disrespectful, but he may not understand how insulting it is.  It's similar to a picture my brother in his late 20s posted that was a Star Wars spoof of the vietnam memorial, and an older gentleman from our church got offended about it until I remminded him that for us vietnam was a war from a bygone era to us.

I'm by no means supporting what your cousin did, just pointing out that he may not understand why it is a big deal.

  • I'm lurking from feb board. But that's bs. My oldest is 16 and was obviously young when 9/11 happened. Even though he was in kindergarten when it happened he knows what a terrible thing it was and would never make light of it. On the 10 th anniversary he and I watched several specials on tv about it. He asked me how I felt when I saw it originally. We also talked about some friends that were in NYC and how they felt. Death doesn't = funny, that's a serious teaching moment as a parent.
