This is the third time I've had mastitis in 2 months. I never had it with DS1. The nurse today said that skipping feedings wont cause it but this is not true right? DS has been only wanting one side lately and i have not been pumping the other side. Do i need to pump to keep from getting infected? I feel like this engorgement/fullness is the cause. Has anyone Else had this issue? The nurse said it is caused only by bacteria in the baby's mouth but now that i think about it maybe she was confusing it with a yeast infection since her advice was to Pump instead of nurse to prevent further infections.
I dont want to pump too much and create an oversupply and i also just don't have ? LOT of opportunities to pump. I just need the baby to eat what I'm making. Help!
Re: Mastitis questions
I would pump if your unused breast is still producing and getting engorged. I would also talk to an LC (Cheryl at Special Addition). And Kellymom dot con is an excellent resource. GL!
i would pump. you need to find a way to empty that breast so it doesn't stay clogged. are you going back to work? you could save all that pumped milk for a freezer stash or start introducing a bottle.
ditto talking to an LC or checking kellymom.
Are you getting clogged ducts ahead of your mastitis?
I think it's pretty clear that if you don't empty a boob, things get backed up, bacteria can multiply and you end up with an infection. Baby or Pump you gotta empty that bad boy or "wean" from that boob forever.
I think your best bet is to see the LC so that the baby will nurse evenly from both sides. Especially if you want to keep the "direct from the top approach".
