My fitness pal + breastfeeding

Do any bf moms use the my fitness pal app? My daughter is 20 months and I breast feed 2-3x a day. I know I'm not burning 500 calories...but how many could I estimate? I just really want to loose the pooch! I think maybe 150-200 calories is a good guess.

Re: My fitness pal + breastfeeding

  • I breastfed my twins and used my fitness pal.  When I was exclusively breastfeeding/pumping, I would add 700-800/day for my "exercise" calories (so between 350 and 400 for each baby).  I decreased the number of calories that I claimed to burn as I slowly weaned them (over about 2 months).  I really just paid attention to my supply.  If I noticed my supply was taking too much of a dip too quickly, I upped the calories I was consuming.  I lost all of my pregnancy weight (and then some) by the time my twins were 5 months without compromising my supply.  150-200 calories seems a little low if you are exclusively breastfeeding.  Breastmilk has approximately 20 calories an ounce in it, so 200 calories per day is only alloting for approximately 10 ounces.

  • You actually enter "Breastfeeding" into the food search and it will bring up a whole load of options. Instead of taking calories away, it will add them back into your daily intake allotment for you  (I experimented with it to figure it out)

My daughter is 8 months old and also on solid foods so I choose the "Older baby, minimal feedings" option which gives me an extra 200 calories. I want to make sure she's getting what she needs without causing me to overindulge and so far, I haven't had any issues with my supply dropping at all :) Hope this helps!!!
