Tell me I didn't overreact - L&D trip

So I posted earlier about dizziness and such, but then started having bHs every 5 min or so. I debated going to l&d or calling my OB cause I didn't want to be that mom that overreacts.  But finally after 4 hours of bh's every 5 min, decided to go get out. Thankfully I'm closed up, and man...that internal hurt me! I know it's not supposed to but it did.  Anyways, I had 2 contractions while hooked up for 10min, so I wasn't imagining them. They just told me to go rest, and gave me a false labor sheet and what real labor would be like. I just feel so stupid for going up there.  Would u have too?   She told me it wasn't a matter of how many in an hour, but I'd they get more and more painful....

Re: Tell me I didn't overreact - L&D trip

  • I think you need to talk to your OB about what their parameters are for you going to l&d. I had no idea it was so common for people to just go to l&d on their own though before I was on here. I've always been told to call the Ob's emergency line and they'd instruct you. They also call L&D to let them know you're coming, you go straight up, and you have your OB's instructions to the nursing staff as to how to proceed. The nurse sounds kind of douchy though. My OB said at this stage it definitely matters how many contractions are in an hour. Once you're past 35 weeks and they won't stop labor anyway then yeah... she said wait to see if they progress and get painful. But her instructions are more than 6 in an hour (8 for me because of my fluid) and to call her and plan on heading to L&D to get checked. I think it's totally foolish to sit at home at 32 weeks contracting for hours just waiting to see if they get painful. By that point your cervix may already be responding and they may be harder to stop. So no... I don't think you overreacted at all. I would have personally called my OB, but she would have sent me anyway. Nobody wants a 32 weeker.

    Yes Agreed.

My OB doesn't have an after hours line FWIW, so I would've gone straight to L&D if it was outside of her normal office hours. I live in a smaller town and this is the norm.

  • My doctor has always said to call if I have more than six BH in an hour. Also, I'm pretty sure their after-hours message just says to go to the ER in an emergency (but I could be wrong about that).

  • I would have gone in. Even now, with all the contractions I've been having for the past 3 months, 4 hours of contractions every 5 minutes would concern me. I'm glad everything is okay!

eta: my practice doesn't have an after hours line either.

yeah I guess that is the case with many places. Both OBs I've been to have just been completely adamant about calling them first so I guess I just had that drilled in my head. In the OP's case (for example) I would still make sure you know your ob's guidelines for contractions and when to head in, if not just to tell the snotty nurse "My dr. Said to come in if I have more than 5 contractions an hour whether they hurt or not." That way the nurse can't try to make you feel stupid if you're just fllowing your ob's guidelines!

  • I dislike the policy of "wait til they hurt worse" because pain tolerance is relative, a number of contractions in an hour is not. I would have called the on call OB) but I'm sure I would have been sent in after 4 hours of contractions 5 minutes apart.

I don't think you overreacted at all, but make sure you do check with your OB and see what their policy is for the next time so you can tell that to the nurse if she is making you feel dumb.

  • FWIW, my OB does have an after hour nurse line, but its connected to like 10 other practices in the area.  And, they are super unhelpful!  Before my L&D trip at 28 weeks for PTL, after 45 minutes of not getting a call back (and this was after 1 1/2 hours of contractions 9-11 minutes apart, and getting more painful), we finally started the drive to the hospital (I live an hour away).  After 15 more minutes, I finally had to call the nurse line again and basically said that it would nice to actually talk to a nurse, seeing as how we were already on our way to the hospital.  I got a call back in about 5 minutes after that.  But, she was incredibly unhelpful and just told me to go to the hospital (which we were already doing anyway).

I turn 35 weeks on Monday, and after that point they don't really take any measures to stop labor, so I'm going to listen to my body and just go in when I feel like I need to.

  • You didn't over react.  I think that you should "wait til they hurt worse" next time as compared to what you were feeling this time. This was just kind of a baseline for you to compare to. You now know that if they aren't getting closer or stronger then you probably aren't going to dilate. I contract every day at around the same times of the day but they never get any stronger.  I was concerned and my doctor did a ffn test which came back negative, also my cervix was closed and waaayy high. I am not going to the hospital until my contractions hurt worse than that vaginal exam did, ouch!.  Also, if you are dilating usually you will have some light pink spotting along with it so be on the look out for that.

I am also in a small town. However our Dr gave us the direct number to the OB Nurse and if we have any questions/concerns we are supposed to call there.  The OB Nurse will do their best to advise us on what to do.  We've called twice - once about a simple question if I could take a particular cold medicine.  The other time I wasn't feeling well, I was given instruction to hydrate and rest and she would speak with the Dr and call to check on me in an hour... Well she ended up calling back 5 minutes later telling me to come out to be checked.  It didn't dawn on me to mention I had high bp to the nurse and after she talked to my Dr they wanted to see me.

I would recommend checking to see if you can have the number for L&D.  They are there 24/7 so you can always talk to someone to get advice.  As well if you do need to head out they know you're on the way and could most likely coordinate with your Dr.
