fitted's question

i've read the faq and looked this up but i'm just not getting it.

why do fitteds need a cover?

are they just like pockets but need a cover?

do you prefer pockets or fitteds?

(sorry if this is really dumb or been asked/explained before)

Re: fitted's question

  • Pockets have a waterproof layer, PUL or TPU.

Fitteds, don't. They are made of all absorbent material.

Here is a video giving a little bit of info about fitteds. Look at her other videos for other types. :)

  • I'm definitely not the expert since I only use fitteds with covers for bed time on my LO, but I'll try to answer your question.

Pockets have an outer covering (usually PUL) that is waterproof.  Fitteds do not.  Fitteds are just fabric so they get wet.  The fitteds we use are just a thick fabric diaper with extra bamboo inserts for more absorption. When I take my LO's fitteds off her in the morning after sleeping, the whole thing is saturated.  So the cover keeps all of that moisture away from her pajamas and her sheets.

A pocket diaper has an outer portion made of PUL with an inner lining of something to wick moisture away.  This is what touches the baby's skin.  Then you place the absorptive part (the insert) into the pocket.  So the construction is different than fitteds.

I still prefer pockets because I'm not that familiar with fitteds.  However, the fitteds are amazing for overnight now that my LO is starting to wet more.  She soaks right through her pockets and if I stuff them too much, they gape in the legs.  So I think each has their own function, at least for us.

    I hope that makes sense!

  • Having tried both, I prefer pockets. Putting a fitted, and then a cover on my baby is like wrestling an alligator twice.
  • I had trouble totally understanding fitteds at first too.  Basically, they're like a prefold and AIO mixed.  They (usually) have snaps and stuff just like an AIO but they don't have a cover on them.  HTH!
