Cloth Diapering

CD pro is stumped...

I consider myself a cd pro since I have 3+years exp. so most of my friends come to me with their questions and I can usually figure it out.  This one has me a little stumped.

My friend was having major leaks with her pocket diapers.  I got her to strip them.  She boiled all the inserts and washed and washed and washed.  They worked perfectly, no leaks!!  So right after she starts using them again her daughter gets a red rash all over.  Back in sposies, rash gone, cloth and rash comes back.  She never had issues before and the diapers are newly stripped so it's not from the detergent.  What else could it be?  I feel like I'm missing an easy answer!  Help!!

  • Did she use RLR to strip? When I used RLR, I felt like it might have loosened up some build-up but not rinsed it all out and therefore, caused rashes in LO. Maybe more stripping with just hot water washes would help?

Or the suedecloth allergy is a possibility, but seems odd if the LO only started getting the rash post-stripping.

  • She ad been in them all this time so it would be weird if it was a suede cloth allergy. I believe she only boiled them and then washed with just water.
  • I say wash once with regular diaper detergent, then rinse it out 3-4 times.  I bet the RLR or Dawn used to strip is still on the diapers.

  • Check LO's diet for anything new added. I had a very similar problem with DD in her BG OS and thought it was the diapers. Sposies helped a little, but she had persistent rash. Finally after a couple weeks I started to find a correlation between the rash worsening and when DD ate strawberries. She was eating a lot of them because I was buying them by the flat from the farmer's market. Apparently the acidity in her urine against her skin was causing it. Now that she is potty trained we don't have this issue. Before that I had to make sure she didn't eat more than 1-2 strawberries at a time and not too often. Sad, because they are her absolute favorite food. Potty training had an extra perk for her.

    Thanks, that's very interesting!
