Sippy Cups?

I've seen a few of you post about LOs drinking from a sippy cup. How did you know he/she was ready? Are you holding the cup for them or are they holding it themselves? Do you put water, juice or do you put bm/formula in it?  I haven't even thought about offering a sippy cup yet....

Re: Sippy Cups?

  • We've done water, but I don't think she is ready yet. We have the kind that has a straw and DD can suck from the straw as we push on it so she gets the water. But even so, she seems to not be interested in it. We have been taking a break from it, as not to frustrate her or us. I'd give it a go, worst case is LO isn't ready and it goes back in the drawer for a bit :)

  • I only tried once or twice.  I had to hold it for him and he just didn't seem ready yet.  I am waiting a few weeks and then trying again.
  • I bought one for DS today. I just put water with a tiny bit of juice in it for flavor. He actually caught right on. Im sure that if it wasnt full he wouldnt understand he needs to hold it up but he certainly was able to get some liquid out of it.

I didnt know if he was ready or not. Just figured we'd give it a try. I think if he gets it a few times a week, even if he just plays with it, it will help wean him from bottles and the breast later on.

  • I give Evie sippy cups with water in them for breakfest and dinner.  They don't replace bottles but give her something to drink with her meal since those are the two meals where we do BLW so she is feeding herself.

    I got these sippy cups:

They are great, she still doesn't have the strength to hold them up herself so I do hold the cup for her but I just hold it when she reaches for it.  It is up to her to put her mouth on the cup and suck.  These cups work similar to a bottle and are Nuby's Phase 1 sippy cups.  Very low flow.  I am working on her holding the cup on her own and try to lead it to her mouth if she has grabbed onto the cup first, if that makes sense.

  • My LO gets excited when he sees the sippy cup. He can hold it himself, but only wants to chew on the end. If I tip it up for him he will drink the water out of it, but he's more interested in chewing.

  • We give DS a sippy cup with some water after dinner.  He can hold it up himself but we also tip it up for him sometimes.  He will drink a little water from it but isn't super interested in it.

  • I've tried to get DD to use it, but she's just not interested. I have an Avent sippy cup - my mom actually bought it, and I just decided one day to see how she'd like it. Not so much.
