My turn - PDD-NOS dx for my 6yo

Wow, lots of kiddos receiving this dx. Trev was dx as Apraxic when he was 3 as well as having SPD. He received an ADHD dx this fall and just today he was given the dx of PDD- NOS. Makes so much sense! Can anyone explain what services we should be looking for? We need to reconvene the team; he does not currently have an IEP, but I am hoping this qualify him for services. It's one of those things that I kinda always knew, but was hoping I was wrong.

    Wow.

    How are you doing?

I've got to run to a meeting this evening. I'll try to get to this later or first thing tomorrow.

You know, right now I'm ok. I've suspected this for a long time, but people said he was too social. He is social, but I question whether he is making meaningful connections. He does not understand personal space and social pragmatics. I am hoping the school will finally help with these issues.

Your son is almost exactly the same age my son was at his initial dx. It was the end of kindie.

I hate when people say a kid can't be on spectrum because he's friendly or adores his family or has a sense of humor.

There's a kind of AS/PDD-Nos who is described as "oddly social and socially odd". At seven that was my son- he wanted to connect with peers, but only on his own terms and without any notion that their thoughts/needs might be different than his. He wanted friends but was unsure of the definition. Sometimes I think he looked at peers as some sort of spohisticated toy provided for his entertainment from which he could disengage when he'd had enough fun.

The school will likely give him a basic social skills group therapy- 30-60 minutes a week learning to take turns, basic sportmanship, recognizing and following the unwritten rules of etiquette of the classroom and playgorund. I'd look for a Michelle Garcia Winner Program like SuperFlex or Thinking About You, Thinking About Me. These are my favorites because they teach social thinking rather than jsut rote scripts.

Going forward, he might need support around fine and graphomotor skills. A few kids need Adapted PE because of tone, social or sensory issues. Organizational support and learning to recognize when he needs help and how to get it should start soon as well. In the general Boston area, some schools do really well and other not so much.

It's one of those things that you know, but secretly hope is not the case. I had convinced myself that there was no way the Dr. would give such a dx, but then I hear, "So, I agree, we need to get Trevor some help in the area of social skills. I gave him the dx of PDD-NOS. I hope this helps in getting the services he needs." Such a nice man; he really got it and put all the pieces together. I've had too many people look at individual pieces of the puzzle; it's just a speech delay; he just a quirky kid; he's too social. This dr took what we've dealt with for 6 years and put the puzzle together. I had a good cry tonight, but I know this will only help us. I hope he gets the IEP and receive services I KNOW he needs. Thanks.
