Cloth Diapering

CDing in really hot climates

I had a relative discourage me in CDing because I live in the South where we have crazy hot summers and she believes that CD will cause extra rash issues and problems of that sort because of the heat. Is this true or false? Anyone have a brand that they can recommend that fixes this issue? I don't really want to give up the idea of CDing so I appreciate any tips to dispel this issue!

Re: CDing in really hot climates

  • False.

There have been really informal, but repeatable tests done by various cding groups where they took the temperature of different types of diapers (by sticking a thermometer in there while the babies were wearing them). How they rated from coolest to warmest:

    Fitteds with wool
    Fitteds with PUL cover/PUL cds
    Sposies

Basic "science" behind it is that fabric breaths better than plastic and gel, which allows for better air flow, less trapped heat, and a general better environment for the bum.

So tell that relative to stick it in their ear!

Question: Are Bumgenius, Charlie Banana and the like considered PUL cover types? I'm trying to create a small stock pile of a couple well reviewed brands so we can see what works for us before investing totally.

  • We live in AZ and it gets roasting here in the summer. We haven't had any issues with diaper rash because of the heat. (we do tend to stay indoors more, but there is still the car rides and some outside time  for errands and such).  and the brands you mention charlie banana and bumgenious....yes those have pul that's what provide the waterproofness of the diaper.

Love it!  Can I really stick it in my MIL's ear?

Tell them to put a plastic underwear on and see if their plastic or cotton panties are cooler.

  • I've cd two babies in Texas heat.  Last summer was absolutely miserable.  No rashes here.
