What are you dOing for headaches?

I keep getting migraines that end up with me losing my vision or seeing waves and then make me throw up. I had one all weekend and now I'm at the beginning stage of another. Tylenol doesn't help at all and I usually end up throwing it up before it really can help. Also, I'm having my hand fall asleep and sometimes part of my face along with it. I'm drinking tons of water. Any other ideas or suggestions?  This pregnancy has been so different than the last!

  • I would give your gp or obgyn a call. These migraines sound pretty debilitating.

  • Exactly what PP said. I would be calling the OB/MW as soon as possible if I were feeling that horrible. I had a migraine the other day that blurred my vision and made me pale as a ghost, but it was no worse than any I had before I was pregnant. Luckily I got to just go home and sleep it off (5 hours straight!). You're right though - tylenol will likely not help at all.

Stay hydrated, keep out of the light, use cold compresses, and maybe even try some caffeine as well. Good luck - hope they get better soon!

  • I get migraines too. I had one the other day that was able to sleep off but my doctor told me to come in for fluids/pregnancy safe IV drugs if I couldn't get rid of it. Definitely tell your OB about the migraines. I hope you find a solution - they are so miserable.

  • I'm in the same boat. I get about 2 a week that last from 2-3 days. I've tried every drug on the market and nothing works for me. Midrin worked w/ my last Pregnancy but is useless now, and I've only got a few pill left of my stash of that anyway since they discontinued it. My next step is acupuncture.

Regardless of my little rant here, I'd talk to your OB ASAP, before the weekend. What you are explaining sounds like aura, which is a pretty standard pre-onset symptom of migraines. There are quite a few safe Rx medications to take during pregnancy and your OB should be able to recommend one.

As w/ all migraines, make sure you're keeping a food & sleep record, as well as when the migraine starts & it's duration.

  • Does caffeine help?  My headaches are fairly minor but usually a can of soda will take the edge off.

Ditto the others, though, probably good to call your OB on this.

  • Go see a chiropractor and/or get a massage. Did wonders for me when I was having a migraine. I was also given a supplement to take that they said will help with the migraines though just the adjustment helped me :)

Agree. I'm able to tame a migraine if I drink a can of regular Coke - that is, if my morning coffee doesn't help.

If you're having facial/hand numbness, though, please check with your OB. It's probably nothing - probably just some weird quirk with pregnancy - but it's best to be safe than sorry.

I hope your migraines go away soon or at least ease up to be manageable! Migraines are a total bummer.

  • Ugh, I used to get those migraines all of the time, only I would always lose consciousness. I had to be medicated all the time, I know how hard those are.  I recommend calling your GP and also when you realise it is coming lay down in a cool, dark quiet room, with a cold compress.  Also I am no longer on medication and haven't had that type of migraine in a long time, but exercise helped.
  • I am w/you and at the end of my rope. I have been having migraines this entire pregnancy - they are debilitating. I started acupuncture last week (hopeful, but nothing yet). I have also seen a neurologist and my OB several times. There seems to be some bp meds you can take, but my bp is really low now (which will likely change as I developed pre-e with DS).  I am seeing my OB again about this on Monday and hope to leave with a rx and a plan to just monitor my bp. I work as a teacher so I have a nurse there who can help and my DH is a EMT so he can help at home as well. The caffeine suggestion is helpful, but I really don't find it is too helpful with an actual migraine :( Tylenol plain old sucks too.  I really hope you get some relief soon!!!! Please page me if you find any "miracle" answers!

  • Talks to my midwife this morning and she was a little quick to throw prescriptions at me. We decided to try and get my nausea in check with b6 and unisom to see if eating regular meals will help and then she also prescribed midrin for me to pick up just in case I do get a headache and need to knock it out. I'm hoping that greeting my tummy in check will fix my head.

  • So sorry to hear that you're suffering from ROTTEN migraines. Thinking back to all the conventional wisdom my neurologists have given me over the years, I know Tylenol is worthless in the midst of a migraine, but can you try taking tylenol at the FIRST sign of headache? That was what they always had me do with my Rx meds. Also- I agree with those who say to see your doctor (OB or even neurologist.) My doctors have me on preventive supplements of Magnesium Oxide (400 mg daily) and Vitamin B2 (200 mg twice daily), and so far while pregnant I've only had basic headaches, not migraines (huge progress for me.)

Good luck! I feel for you!
