I just posted this on the 2nd trimester board, but I thought you ladies may be able to answer.
I have to go next week to get my 3 hour glucose test done. My number for the 1 hour glucose test was 214, which is VERY high. I know some doctor's don't even give you the 3 hour test if your number is over 200 and just start treating you for gestational diabetes. I'm going in with the assumption that I won't pass the 3 hour test, but I'm still holding out some hope. Has anyone had a really high number for their 1 hour test and still passed the 3 hour test?
Re: My 1 hr. glucose was over 200. Any chance I will pass the 3 hr. test?

214 isn't very high, but it is high.
Just because you failed the one hour doesn't mean you will fail the 3 hour. It depends on your diet and also how your body is processing it. Some women who eat a very healthy diet will end up failing the glucose tests, but after the test they are always within normal range and their A1c (a test that shows blood sugar levels over 6 months) is within non diabetic range.
Everyone is different and no diabetes is very cut and dry...I'm a type1 so I know this first hand. I'm type 1 and my pancreas still makes some insulin. Most type 1 diabetics don't make any insulin. There's too many variables in there, so have hope mama!
Anyone can get GD. When I had it with DS I was only 29, I gained 6 lbs when I was diagnosed (gained 12 lbs total and he was 10 lbs). With this LO I'm still only 31 and have lost 16 lbs total so far (lost a few lbs before I was diagnosed at 14 weeks.
It's still pretty darn high for one hour, especially when the cut-off is 130. The numbers may be different for Type 1 but honestly there are some of us that are 2+ timers with GD and think that it's really high.

mothermonster, you give terrible diabetes related advice. period. first, 214 is high even for a type 1 and especially for a pregnant woman. second, an a1c reflects blood glucose reading over 3 months, not 6 months. it usually isn't tested with gestational diabetics because the test would only be taken 2 times during pregnancy and wouldn't be able to offer any additional insight not found through daily testing. third, your bio says you're type 2 insulin dependent, not type 1. i find it curious that you never comment on t1 related posts but always, always point out in diabetes related posts that you're "type 1 so ???you know what you're talking about". fourth, stop telling pregnant women that low blood sugar is not compatible with life and that lows will kill their unborn child. it's false and scares the crap out of people for no good reason. fifth, you have multiple times, said that high numbers have not caused birth defects in your unborn child. of course not, birth defects are measured upon birth, not in the womb.
i'm not pregnant and never have been but i have been t1 for 15 out of my 25 years. your advice isn't just annoying, it's offensive and potentially harmfull. please stop because you're full of crap.
My 1 hour test was 180. I passed all but one part of the 4 part 3hr test. All my numbers were low except the hour after drinking the syrup drink. Even though I technically passed the 3hr test (you need to fail 2 of the 4 parts to be considered to have GD), they still diagnosed me with the GD. It has been a very frustrating experience. I've been tracking my blood sugars and they've been good (whether I stick strictly to the diet or not). I was so upset about GD. I hated the lack of control I felt. I HATED the idea of sticking myself in my fingers. I have a phobia of needles. They gave me a meter with a very tiny needle. It took my 1/2 an hour to get up the courage to stick myself the first few times. But honestly it's not that bad, you really do get used to it. Writing down everything I eat has been a challenge, but it's okay.
I feel like even if I had passed the 3hr, I still would have been diagnosed, because of the high 1hr number and the fact that I am obese. I don't think I would put myself through the 3hr test again. It was absolutely horrible. It made me sooo sick. I do not think it was good for the baby. I went from a fasting number of 75 to 205 within 1 hour. And by the last blood test I had crashed back down to 71. I had to lay down on an exam table for most of the test. I felt as though I had been poisoned. I wanted to vomit but knew I couldn't or it would mess up the test.
Its up to you whether you want to put yourself through a 3hr test. Just don't get your hopes up, in all likelihood you will probably fail. I'm sorry! It might be better just to make peace with it and move on.
If you do decide to take the test, eat as you normally would for the days leading up to the test. I did low carb up until the day before the test, and I think it made it even more difficult for my body to process the sugar drink they gave me. Good luck!
THANK YOU! AND I BOW TO YOU!
Any time I see her posts she just gives horrible advice and I always want to say to her HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU HAD GD??? Oh that's right you don't you are just diabetic.
She actually sounds like my mother who has type 2 also but doesn't follow any diet and is on 3 meds but states she's well controlled when her fasting is at 130 (which she only checks her fasting because that's "what she was told" even when my sister went to her one appointment and my mom got chastised for not checking her sugars or paying attention to any type of diet). My mom also has no problem stating that 200 isn't a high number even after 2 hours PP.
