::whispering:: I think we made it past the 45min intruder

Naps went to hell in a handbasket in our house the past few weeks. H and I try and try to get the little guy to sleep longer than 20-40min and it just hasn't worked. He seems constantly tired, but cannot sleep. And really, not for lack of his parents trying! He hasn't been particularly upset by the lack of sleep (e.g. not fussy, etc), but the red eyes and yawning are just so sad.

However, this is the 2nd morning in a row where he has napped in his crib for longer than 45min. :) I am so excited I could just scream - but won't because, you know, don't want to wake the baby.

I think he is finally starting to get the self-soothing down. I just hope that he makes this a trend and starts getting the sleep that he needs. I have a feeling it will make all of us a happier and more smiley bunch. :)

  • We have had a few successes too. Right now, she is in the swing and normally I turn off the swing part after a bit, but if it keeps her asleep, I dont care! Happy dance. It just makes her day so much more pleasant. She plays better and has more fun

  • Yay success! We seem to have fixed it in the morning, but the noon nap is a clusterf-ck unless I go in at the 35 minute mark and work him through the transition. I can usually get another hour if I do that successfully.

Did you do anything to get him through or did he just pass out of it? Also the the PP, what did you do to help your LO transition? We've been battling this beast for at least 5-6 weeks and I would say my LO has napped more than 45 min a max of 10 times in that time. Any tips would be appreciated!

  • Yay!  I'm so happy for you - I know J's been giving you all sorts of sleep trouble.  It's so much nicer when they go longer stretches.

  • CTaylor - I've been using the baby whisperer method. I basically go into his room 30 minutes into his nap (because his cycle is usually 35 minutes) and when he first stirs, I put my hand over his chest and try to soothe him through transition that way. It works most of the time, but not always. There is more info here: https://www.babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=213387.0

  • We've been battling this for 5-7 weeks now.  Sometimes I can get him to go back to sleep and some days I can't.  It's exhausting how many times I'm up and down the stairs to get him back down.  Today I decided to let him fuss for a few minutes and about 8 minutes in he passed out.  I feel terrible but I was starting to get super frustrated and I know he needed his sleep.  Hoping this passes soon.

  • I'm not sure if this is helping for naps and I know some are against this method, but this week he started refusing a bottle before bed b/c he just wanted to get to sleep already. I would nurse him a little on one side to get him mellow and he'd start to pass out and then I'd kiss him, say goodnight and put him in the crib.

And then I left the room and let him fuss it out.

The first night it took 25min for him to settle, the 2nd night 10min, last night 3min. This is a child who has always had trouble going to sleep and I think that helping him learn how to soothe himself to sleep at this age is possibly helping with naps, too. He still wakes 2-3 times a night to eat and I go in and feed him and then he is back down until he's hungry again (with no fussing to fall back asleep btw).  I'm sure part of it is also him just growing out of it.

Whatever it is, I really really hope it continues!

We do this at night too, but I still have a crappy napper that only sleeps 30 minutes.  I wish I had a 45 minute intruder!

CF - I just looked at your ticker and your babe is about a week and a half younger than mine.  If it makes you feel better, mine went from crappy napper to super awesome napper almost 2 weeks ago. Fingers crossed it's just around the corner for you.
