Pregnant after 35

crazy to spend >$500 on a glider?

I set in a Dutailier gliber in BRU tonight and fell in love.  So comfy.  I set in 4 others and they were either too short in the seat or not cushy enough.

I just decided to forgo a $50 crib for a $140 crib because I don't want to spend $$$ on things that we won't use for more than a few years.  But I can envision the glider being used in our home for a decade or more.  I don't think I'll enjoy sitting in one with a hard seat.

It is the #1 recommended brand in Baby Bargains.  Curious to hear from ladies on this board: from a mom perspective, is it worth the cost to get a good glider?

  • i love our dutailier (dh and kids love it too) ... but ... my mom bought it for us.  i don't think i would have spent the $ myself.

  • I got a pricey one, b/c we schlepped around to at least 8 different stores and I can't tell you how very very many I sat in.  In that time, I found 3 that were actually comfortable for me (I'm short).  One was like over $1k, which is insane, one was under $400 and one was over $500.  I tried to order the cheapest one from BRU but after 3 visits to the store and at least 5 calls to their furniture specialist, b/c it was a "new product" they still couldn't figure out how to order it in the brown or green colors we wanted OR even tell me what color brown or green it was available in.  At that point, I decided I couldn't trust them and wasn't going to buy something from them that was going to be a special order and we couldn't return.

So, we ordered the in between priced one.  The one we got, though, looks just like a regular chair, it doesn't have the wood sides.  Since we got it in solid brown, we think down the road it will also work in other rooms in our house.   Personally, I don't think I'd spend that much on one of the wood sided ones that scream "nursery glider".

  • We got a hand-me-down wooden rocking chair.  I bought cushions for $30.00 at Bed Bath & Beyond & it's been well used w/DS.  He loves rocking in it by himself too.

  • I can't bring myself to spend a lot on furniture for the nursery -- I feel like the risk of baby destroying it, chewing on it, etc, is too high.  I'll be much less upset putting a $150 glider out for the trash in two years than a $500 one.

I got the Dutailer gilder and ottoman from BRU and LOVE it. DS is 2.5 and we still use it. I rock him in his room if he wakes in the middle of the night. I formula fed, so the glider was a prime spot for me to give DS his bottle. I do not regret spending the $$ on the glider at all!

  • I think that is a lot but in my circumstances, just about anything is a lot. I'd imagine that if you had the financial means to afford it, then why not? But, for me, that much would never be an option. ... not that that matters for answering your question, of course :)

  • I also fell in love with that brand, so I hunted around at consignment shops. I ended finding one in good shape for $180. If you're not in a rush, it's worth keeping an eye out for a used one - if you don't find one, the new ones will still be selling in a few months!

  • I only used my glider for a year and then put it in storage, so from my perspective that is a lot of money to spend given the purpose.  I think it depends on if you get one that looks more like furniture that you would use in your house in which case you may get more use from it.

  • I also want something other than the wooden/cloth nursery rocker. We've been looking at comfy recliners. We'll probably spend around $500 and get more than our money's worth since we each think we'll sleep in it at some point! After it's done with its nursery duty, we plan to move the recliner elsewhere in our house. It's going to be one of our only true splurges, as I am quite price conscious about everything else!

  • With my first 2 kids I practically lived in my rocker, so to me it is a perfectly acceptable area to splurge in.  I plan to get a new one for this baby and I'm sure that I will use it just as much.

  • It isn't crazy, especially if you have the means.  I looked at those rockers, but wound up getting a really comfortable recliner.  Best purchase of my first pregnancy.  I wound up sleeping in it quite a bit because I could not get comfortable in bed.  We found a recliner to be more multifunctional for our household, so you might consider looking at them!
  • We plan to use ours in another room after we are done in the nursery.  I also love the chair so we are also considering investing in one ourselves.
