2nd Trimester

My belly is huge at 22 weeks, anyone else???

I'm 22 weeks and my belly is very big. It's getting to the point where doing certain exercises is becoming almost impossible. I noticed a lot of women out here saying that they don't have a belly yet and they're around 25 weeks pregnant. This is my first child, I'm 5'4, I do have a very short torso and long legs and I weighed 120 before I got pregnant. I know everyone's body is different but I'm feeling like I'm bigger than most people at this point in my pregnancy. Anyone know why or does anyone else have a big belly at 22 weeks? I'm nervous of what I'll be dealing with at 30 weeks!!!

Re: My belly is huge at 22 weeks, anyone else???

  • Me!  This is my second, so naturally I'm going to be bigger.  But I was big with DS too.  In fact, at 14 weeks when I made the news public, people asked me if I was carrying twins.  That made me feel great by the way.

     You're right - everyone carries differently.  Don't stress.  :)

  • first and foremost, you do have to remember everyone is different...

but this was the case for me back at that time frame... and I thought I would be MASSIVE going into the 30's weeks... well, my bump actually started getting smaller for about 2 weeks as he was turning and flipping and getting in different positions. I now feel like I am not getting any smaller or bigger at this point...

As long as your doctor is comfortable with your size/weight gain etc. I wouldn't worry about it.

    GL with everything!

  • I've had a few people tell me that I look big for 22 weeks, and then the other day I had someone say I was small for 22 weeks.

I am 5'2, I've gained 10lbs so far, and 5 inches around my waist (my actual waist, not the biggest part of my belly). I'm not usually into measuring or anything, but I have to fit into a bridesmaid dress two weeks before my due date so I measure myself every few weeks to see how much room I have left.

I'm pretty much all belly. I haven't gained anywhere else except for boobs (2 cup sizes). I'm starting to have some difficulty bending over and getting socks on while standing (that's mostly due to some RLP, though).

There are a lot of reasons people carry big or small - height, weight before pregnancy, weight gain during pregnancy, body shape, abdominal muscle strength, etc. I don't think anyone can tell you "why" you're carrying the way you are.

  • I'm big also. I am much like you, only I weighed a more to start with. I'm 5'2" with a very short torso also but I started out at 169 even though I carried my weight very well (flat tummy). I'm very noticably pregnant and I was actually starting to show at about 13 weeks. I'm a FTM too. I asked my doctor about it because I was afraid I was getting to big too fast and he said that because I have such a short torso there isn't a whole lot of room for all my "stuff" to re-arrange itself in there so it has to go somewhere and that is out!

  • My doctor hasn't said anything and I haven't asked either. He has told me that I'm right on target as far as my weight goes so I guess that's a good thing.
  • I'm 5'3" and was 165 when I got pregnant (FTM). I was into endurance running (and just completed a half marathon days before getting pregnant), and was in pretty good shape. I'm at 20 weeks now, and have gained about 10 pounds so far. It has all been in my belly (and a little in my boobs). I started showing pretty early too, but as a PP said, being so short there's not a lot of room for everything to go. I haven't spread out horizontally at all, so for me everything is pushing forward.

Here are some pics I've taken of my belly progress. By 9 weeks I had a tiny bump going, by 14 it was filling out a little more, and now it definitely looks like there's a baby in there, and not just a really big sandwich for lunch:

  • I just got told that I look like I have a beach ball in my belly and in her next breath asked if I was sure I wasn't having twins.

  • dani2480: Thanks for sharing. I clicked on your picture links but they all say that the pics have been deleted. I'm sure being short or having a short torso has a lot to do with. I too am pushing out instead of to the sides.

Hmm, sorry they didn't work. I was having that issue with Photobucket the other day too, even though the pictures definitely are there!

In any case, I'm sure you're fine. One thing I noticed, from taking the pictures, is that I feel like I look a lot bigger than I actually do. What I see in the mirror, or when I look down at my belly is actually quite a bit different than what the camera shows.

  • I think you should also keep in mind that your idea of "Im HUGE" and someone elses idea could be 2 different things. 1 person could think they arent that big, whereas another person gaining the same amount with the same build might this differently.  That's why its so hard to compare yourself to someone else on a forum.
  • I am only 18 weeks but I feel like I'm very big in my belly already, too. I feel like we're similar because I'm 5"3 and was 120 before pregnancy as well. I have gained 10 pounds total as of today and I don't see it anywhere except in the belly!

Honestly scared for how I'm going to look/feel in a few weeks, since I'm already struggling as well, especially at work with back pain!

  • I'm 5'3" and started out at 110, gained 5 pounds so far.  And I'm showing, even though until yesterday's ultrasound, I felt like it just looked like I'd eaten a huge meal.  Seems more like a real bump now, though that's probably just psychological.  It makes sense to me to be showing as I'm short, though it seems strange that I am but haven't gained terribly much.  My doctor didn't say anything, though, so I guess it's ok.
  • This is my 3rd.  I'm the size of a house!

  • I was 5'5 and 115 pounds before pregnancy (RUNNER) --- I have next to no waist, very short torso... I have gained 10 pounds and 7!!! inches around my tummy. I am HUGE :) lol.  Of course, at my ultrasound the tech did tell me that my baby was and I quote... "a VERY big baby". He was 11 ounces at 19 weeks so he measured over a week ahead. Seriously though... I bet you just feel huge because everyone tells me that I am all baby and that I have such a small bump for over 5 months. In our minds, I just think we feel big because we have always been so small.

Now, at almost 22 weeks I do feel like I have mellowed out. I do not think that my tummy is getting bigger just yet. He just popped out quick and is staying put for a while.

  • I have a huge baby bump. I have a short torso and am about 5'5 I was heavy prior to pregnancy. I think the reason my stomach is so big is that I had five miscarriages and had read you got bigger sooner with each pregnancy. I love it though I love seeing my bump and knowing thats my baby

  • I'm 21 weeks and feel huge but a waiter in a restaurant that I went to last night says I have a small watermelon in my tummy. I was 145 lbs (5'6") before I started IF treatments and gained around 8-10 lbs from that and at my 20wk appointment I've gained a total of 13 lbs, which is right where I should be.
