Do I need a nursing stool?

I just came across a nursing stool on Amazon and I'd never heard of one before. I did a quick google search and found some info but I thought I would ask here - should I get one? I am a FTM who plans to nurse at least one year. We don't have a glider, yet. My friend told me I'd spend a lot of time breastfeeding on the couch. Would this help me be more comfortable? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

Re: Do I need a nursing stool?

  • We ended up buying a recliner instead of a glider. We don't have a nursery so it's in our living room with a small end table so I can keep water and a small lamp on it for night feedings (plus other breastfeeding accessories like nursing pads, lanolin, etc). The recliner foot rest is enough for me and the reclining back really came in handy because I have a forceful letdown and reclining is a good way to combat it because you're using gravity to your advantage.

  • You don't need a nursing stool, but I found it does make things a bit easier/more comfortable for me.  If you are planning to buy a glider, wait to buy a nursing stool.  The glider I have, came with the ottoman and a nursing stool, so you may not need to buy one seperately.  Then you can just keep it in whatever room you nurse in most.

  • I've never wanted one.

Heck, we bought a glider (only because DH's grandma insisted on buying it for us), and I never nursed in it. I prefer the couch. I have just a simple IKEA knock-off chair in DS's room. Most of the time, we nursed lying down anyway.

It's one of those things some people like, but it's far from necessary.

  • I have one and use it everyday. DD's nursery is tiny, so I don't have room for an ottoman in there and I like to have my feet up. When I nurse elsewhere in the house, my feet are either up on the coffee table, or up in the recliner.

  • We bought a recliner. Best investment ever. Never had a nursing stool, I just used the bath stool someone bought me off my registry bc the recliner is too big for my feet to touch the ground.

  • I nursed for a year and never heard of such a thing, so no not needed. I liked to sit Indian style best while nursing any way.

This.  I'm glad I got one.  Mine is the Medela nursing stool.

  • It's definitely not a must.  I must admit though, I tend to find myself nursing with my feet up in a recliner most of the time, and it does seem more comfortable.  Other times I just deal without it, sit cross-legged like someone else said, or put my knees up.
