Kick counts

The "no movement" post made me think to ask this. Has anyone else been told to start kick counts yet? My midwife told me to start this week and if I feel less than 10 in 2 hours then I'm supposed to go to L&D to get checked out.

ETA: I suck at accurately describing things...lol!  What I *should* have said was when you start the kick count, it should be in an active time of day for them, and they should kick/roll/punch/whatever 10x's in just that 2 hour window, and if not then go to L&D. Not move 10x's every single 2 hours.

Re: Kick counts

  • I haven't been to my MW since January. I have my next appointment this Tuesday.

But I don't think Ella always kicks 10 times in 2 hours. Sometimes she'll have a kicking, punching, and rolling rampage in an hour or so, but its definitely not constant at 10/ 2 hours.

It's definitely something I'll ask my MW about, though. Thanks!

  • My doctor hasn't said anything to me yet.  I feel at this time my kicks are still pretty inconsistent.  Some days he is nonstop.  Other times I only notice him a few times throughout the day.  I also have an anterior placenta.

  • I never heard of having to count kick counts but will be asking my dr at my next appt.  I defintely don't feel that many in 2 hours.  I didn't feel anything yesterday but did earlier today eating lunch.  I didn't feel movement until 22 weeks though which my dr thought was pretty late.
  • My OB didn't mention it at my last appt this past Monday. I typically watch for movement patterns on my own anyway. He has spurts where there is tons of  movement and then nothing for a few hours. I usually just assume he is sleeping. His active times are consistent each day so unless he isn't moving much around the time he normally does I don't worry about it. When he is moving I get 10 in 2 minutes :)

I don't think my LO always kicks 10 times in 2 hours either. Sometimes I don't feel him for awhile and then he'll start having a dance party in there. :) Also he is way more active at night when I'm trying to sleep than during the day.

I wasn't told to count kicks. My OB just asks me if I've been feeling movement.

  • I'm a FTM, but 10 in 2 hrs seems like a lot when they're supposed to be sleeping for 10-14 or so hrs/day & not always while we're sleeping.  I feel lots of movement, but it def goes a few hrs in b/w sometimes.  I havent been told yet by my OB that I should start counting, but I'm going to ask at the next appt.

My doctor told me the same thing so I have a few more weeks to go.

This.  But my doctor also said:  Lay down to count and if you don't feel 10 in hour, baby is probably just asleep.  Try again a few hours later.

  • My OB never wanted kick counts with LO.  She only said to watch if the baby was unusually quiet or frantic.  With this LO, I haven't been asked and doubt that I will, since I'm with a super laid back Midwife this time.

I agree with pp, 10 kicks per 2 hour wouldn't work for me anyway.  LO definitely has extend periods of activity, followed by hours of silence.

Not 10 kicks per every 2 hours, it's 10 kicks in that 2 hour frame that you're doing the kick count in.

  • My OB hasn't mentioned it yet, but I've still been doing them on my own just because I'm kinda crazy like that.  I've figured out I can usually get 10 within a minute or two around 8:00 at night.

That makes way more sense.  10 times every two hours would drive me crazy.  I love feeling LO, but Mommy needs her sleep...and to have a bladder that functions when this is all over.

  • My OB also told me that if LO is not active when I would expect her to be, to drink orange juice, lay down, and have DH talk to my tummy.

  • I asked my OB about it but he said it is still early and I really only need to worry about kick counts the last 2 months or so. He also said that if things feel off or I can't feel LO even after laying down for a while that he'd rather me be safe than sorry and call the office.

LO still hasn't developed a steady wake and sleep cycle yet. I've felt her every day since 17.5 weeks, so as long as I feel her some throughout the day I feel like things are fine. If I didn't feel LO at all one day I'd definitely call.

  • That kind of seems like a weird pattern to look for just because at this point the LOs are supposed to be on a 12-14 hour sleep cycle, right? So wouldn't it make sense for them not to kick a ton every 2 hours?

  • My OB said after 28 weeks and only to do a kick count if movement seems less than normal.

The kick count sheet she gave me also said 10 kicks/rolls/movements in 2 hours.

Not *every* 2 hours, just the 2 hours you are monitoring the kick counts in (in their most active time of day).

I thought I clarified that... maybe not. lol

  • My dr told me to start doing them at my last appointment, 24 weeks. It seems like thats early compared to most of the replies, but I think she does everything early, my 28 week appointment is my last monthly one, I go bi-weekly after that and most bumpies say they dont start bi-weekly til 32 or 34 weeks. But I'm cool with it, I actually am excited to go to the dr for once :)
